The Latzfonser Kreuz refuge (also Latzfonser-Kreuz-Hospiz or Heiligkreuzhütte , ital. Rifugio Santa Croce di Lazfons ) is a refuge in the Sarntal Alps in South Tyrol . It is located at an altitude of 2311  m slm south of the Kassianspitze and east of the Lückl-Scharte ( 2376  m ), a transition between Tinnetal and Durnholzer Tal or, more spaciously, the Eisacktal and Sarntal . A little below the hut is the Latzfonser Kreuz ( 2300  m ), a pilgrimage site with a pilgrimage church , which houses the Black Lord , a black, carved crucifix in the summer months .

history

The first hut at Latzfonser Kreuz was built around 1800, i.e. in front of the Grünhornhütte , the first refuge of an alpine club , which was built in 1863. However, the hut at the Latzfonser Kreuz was not used as accommodation for mountaineers, but for pilgrims. In 1850, this hospice was destroyed in a fire that killed a man who may have caused the fire.

The Alpine Association and the Archbishop's General Vicariate in Trento are campaigning for a rebuilding due to the lively visit to the pilgrimage site. The project then initially failed due to lack of money and the task fell back to the municipality of Latzfons. The newly built hut again only met very modest demands. The legendary “Gasser-Moidele” now took care of the physical well-being of the pilgrims - a kind-hearted woman who, however, could also become resolute if someone neglected to visit church after tasting too much wine. Even before the turn of the 20th century, the guests included not only pilgrims, but also mountaineers, who praised the management, but complained about the overnight camps in the attic. Therefore, in 1890, the Bolzano section of the DÖAV offered their financial help to expand the hut, later the Alpine Association offered to buy the hut. The Latzfons community rejected both.

After the First World War, the Latzfonser considered a new building and in 1936 construction timber was already being carried up. The outbreak of the Second World War prevented construction and in 1940 the neglected house was used by shepherds as a sheepfold. In 1947 the hut was finally closed because it was in disrepair. The then pastor of Latzfons, Bartholomäus Terzer, decided to buy the ruined hut because the community was not ready to build a new hut. Reconstruction began in 1951 with the approval of the Latzfons municipal council. With many voluntary helpers, wood and money donations, today's shelter was completed in the summer of 1952. Since then, minor renovations and extensions have been carried out repeatedly.

Further details on the history of the pilgrimage church and the pilgrimage site can be found in the article Latzfonser Kreuz .

Increase opportunities

The hut can be reached from the west, from the Sarner side, and from the east, from Latzfons above the Eisack valley . The shortest ascent from the east leads from the Kasereck car park ( 1959  m ) to the hut in 1½ hours, further east-sided climbs lead from the Steineben or Kühhof car parks over the Klausner hut and take about 2 hours. From Reinswald in the Durnholzer Tal you can get to the Latzfonser Kreuz in 3 hours via the Gertrumalm and the Lückl-Scharte .

Tour possibilities

The most popular tour from the Latzfoner Kreuz is the ascent of the Kassianspitze ( 2581  m ). This can be reached in 45 minutes on the marked trail. It is also possible to cross the entire ridge including the two secondary peaks of the Kassianspitze, Ritzlar and Samspitze. The increase for Ritzlar is exposed to something and requires surefootedness , for the visit of all three peaks are about 2 hours to quote.

The Reinswalder Höhenweg leads in 6.0 hours and with 600 meters of altitude over Kassianspitze 2,581 m, Getrumspitze 2,569 m, Getrumjoch 2,585 m, Plankenhorn 2,589 m and Sattele 2,491 m.

Via the Radlsee you can get to the Königsangerspitze 2,436 m in 6 hours and then via Lorenzischarte 2,198 m and Fortschellscharte 2,299 m back to the hut in 6 hours.

The hut is on the path of the so-called Sarntal Horseshoe Tour , which crosses the east and west ridge of the Sarntal Alps in six to seven days.
