The Hirzerhütte ( Italian Rifugio Punta Cervina ) is a refuge in the Sarntal Alps . It was the first Alpine Club hut in what is now South Tyrol .

Location and surroundings

The hut is located at an altitude of 1983  m in a basin on the western flank of the Hirzer , the highest peak in the Sarntal Alps at 2781  m . It is located in the area of the municipality of Schenna in South Tyrol, Italy , a little above the mountain station of the Hirzerseilbahn , which connects it with Saltaus .

The hut serves as a starting point for hikes in the Sarntaler Westkamm and is a stop on the European long-distance hiking trail E5 and the Sarntaler Horseshoe Tour , which, coming from the north, turn east on the Gebirgsjägersteig in an easterly direction to the Obere Scharte. From the Obere Scharte a path leads north to the top of the Hirzer, to the south to that of the Hönig , and to the east down to the Sarntal . Going to the south you can reach the Ifinger or Meran 2000 past the Kratzberger See , to the west is Passeier .

history

In 1873, the Meran section of the German and Austrian Alpine Club (DuÖAV) acquired an alpine hut with financial support from Franz von Meran in order to convert it into accommodation with 18 places for mountaineers. It was inaugurated on September 5, 1874. The Hirzerhütte thus became the oldest Alpine Club hut in what is now South Tyrol.

After the First World War , the hut was expropriated by the Italian state and handed over to the Meran section of the Club Alpino Italiano (CAI), which, however, subsequently neglected it. In 1945 it was bought by a member of the Kofler family, who have managed it since then and had it renovated in 1973. After a fire in 1981, the Hirzerhütte was rebuilt in the same place.
