Career

society

Pletikosa was born in the Croatian coastal town of Split and played at the beginning of his football career as a goalkeeper for his hometown club Hajduk Split . In his first two seasons as a professional, he was only used once. In the 1998/1999 season he played 19 games and was able to prevail as a regular goalkeeper at Split. Pletikosa secured the Croatian Cup with his team in 2000 and also won the Croatian championship title with Hajduk in 2000/01. In the years 2000, 2001 and 2003 Pletikosa with Split was each Croatian runner-up. At Hajduk Split, he completed a total of 175 games in the Croatian league and cup, scoring five penalty goals. In the European Cup he was used 15 times for the Croatian champions from 2001 and scored two penalty goals.

In July 2003, Pletikosa signed a five-year contract with the Ukrainian club Shakhtar Donetsk . With Donetsk he won the Ukrainian Cup in 2004 and was runner-up in the 2003/04 season.

At the beginning of 2007 he moved from Donetsk to Spartak Moscow . In the summer of 2011 he moved to FK Rostov . After his contract with the Russians expired in the summer of 2015 and he was without a club, he moved to Spain to Deportivo La Coruña in January 2016 .

National team

At the Junior Soccer World Cup in Nigeria in 1999 Pletikosa was the goalkeeper of the Croatian national team.

On February 10, 1999, he completed his first international match for the Croatian national soccer team against Denmark . At the age of 20, he was substituted on at half time for goalkeeper Marijan Mrmić . The Croat took part in the 2002 World Cup in Japan and South Korea . His team was eliminated in the preliminary round, but Pletikosa played all three games as a regular goalkeeper. Because of his performance at the World Cup, he was voted Player of the Year in Croatia in 2002.

In the eight qualifying games for the 2004 European Championship in Portugal, the Croatian national team conceded only four goals, which was also thanks to the young goalkeeper Pletikosa. Although he was already nominated for the squad for the finals, he could not participate in this. He suffered a muscle injury from a back pass during training in Lisbon. Vladimir Vasilj was nominated for him , his substitute as the goalkeeper was Tomislav Butina .

In 2006 he took part in his second world championship . In Germany , his team was eliminated after the preliminary round. Pletikosa completed all three games.

He was also the goalkeeper of the Croatian national team at the 2008 European Championships in Austria and Switzerland . After the team had already qualified for the quarter-finals after victories against Austria and Germany , Pletikosa was replaced by Vedran Runje in the last group game against Poland . In the quarter-finals against Turkey he was back in goal. Since he could not save a penalty from the Turks in the penalty shoot- out and three of the four Croatian shooters did not convert, Croatia was eliminated from the tournament.

At the EM 2012 he took part again. He was in the starting line-up in all three preliminary round games, but could not prevent the preliminary round.

On February 6, 2013, like Josip Šimunić and Darijo Srna , he made his 100th international match in a 4-0 win against South Korea .

In the 2014 FIFA World Cup , he completed his third World Cup. Pletikosa played all three preliminary round matches over the full distance, but the team missed the second round, as in 2002 and 2006. After the World Cup, he ended his international career.
