Allmusic critic Thom Jurek awarded four and five possible rating units for the album. Jack Hurst of the Chicago Tribune gave the album 3.5 out of four stars and rated it as "good". Q magazine rated the album three out of five stars and described it as "very relaxed". Alanna Nash of Entertainment Weekly noted that Gill showed his vocal and instrumental skills on the album and awarded the grade "B-". The album was ranked 37th on the Billboard 200 and fifth on the US country album chart. The singles took the following positions on the country charts in the United States and Canada: Pocket Full of Gold (# 7, # 11), Liza Jane (# 7, # 3), Look at Us (# 4, # 12) and Take Your Memory with You (# 2, # 3). The album was awarded two platinum records by the RIAA and platinum in Canada. Pocket Full of Gold has sold more than 2.1 million copies worldwide.
