Pod mocnym aniołem ( Eng . Under the Strong Angel ) is a film adaptation of the book of the same name by Jerzy Pilch (published in 2000, awarded the 2001 Nike National Literature Prize in 2001), filmed in Kraków , Brzesko and Nowy Sącz , which describes the alcoholic excesses of the writer Jerzy and treated other patients who are participating in withdrawal therapy with him. In the group, these people read out stories about their lives, which then appear in fragments in the film. These scenes are often very chaotic and not chronological due to memory gaps, delirium, high suggestibility and perception disorders. Some sequences are repeated several times. Seizures, rape, vomiting, accidents with bloody injuries, aggression (also on the part of the police officers and doctors involved) as well as childhood memories that later led to alcohol addiction are shown. When Jerzy nodded off drunk in front of an ATM, he was woken up by a 27-year-old woman "Ona" (pl. "You"), with whom he fell in love and whom he had already proposed to marry for a short time. Jerzy is a popular and successful author, giving lectures to students, giving interviews on television and radio, where he also discusses alcohol consumption and his work.

"Under the strong angel" is the name of a pub in the film where Jerzy sometimes gets drunk. The Cracow Cafe Szafe (located at ul. Felicjanek / corner ul. Małej) was renamed for these scenes.

Fragments of the following works are used in the film:

  • Literature: Hans Fallada “The Drinker” (1944), Franz Kafka “Diaries 1910–1923”, Charles Bukowski “Women” (1978) and Max Ehrmann's “Desiderata” (1927),
  • Music: "Siekiera" (text and music Tomasz Adamski), "51" (text: J. Rzehak, music: A. Nowak / M. Piekarczyk, volume: TSA), "Rewe ta stogne Dnipr szyrokyj" (text: Taras Szewczenko , Folk tune) and "Bóg się rodzi" (Polish Christmas carol),
  • Film "Pętla" (German end point, by Wojciech Has , production: Kadr Film Studio , Poland, 1957).
