Police Academy 3 - ... and nobody can stop you is the third film in the Police Academy series. It dates back to 1986. He played around 43 million US dollars and thus less than the first two parts. It is also generally rated worse than its predecessor. Still, he's one of the more successful in the series. The film opened in German cinemas on April 10, 1986.

It is the last film by the director Jerry Paris , who died after the shooting.

action

Second time to see: Lance Kinsey
Play one of the instructors: David Graf aka Eugene Tackleberry

The state where the Police Academy is located currently has two police schools. On the one hand Lassard's academy, on the other hand an academy led by Commandant Mauser (known from the previous film). As the governor of the state announced at the closing ceremony, it was decided to close one of the two academies. An independent committee is to evaluate the training and decide which it will be.

Mauser hires Copeland and Blankes to act as his informants in Lassard's academy and ensure that his academy wins. He's also trying to ingratiate himself with the Committee, Governor, and Commissioner Hurst . Lassard, on the other hand, decides to seek help from his top graduates in the face of this challenge - they include almost all of the main characters in the first film.

Mrs. Fackler , known from the first film, is against the wishes of her husband Douglas among the new recruits. There are also some well-known characters from the previous film: the shopkeeper Sweetchuck , the former gang boss Zed and Tackleberry's brother-in-law Bud . There are also two other cadets: Hedges, a wealthy businessman; Karen Adams, an attractive blonde who is courted by and eventually gets closer to Mahoney; and the Japanese exchange cadet Nogata , who first ends up with Mauser, but who does not want him and then sends him to Lassard. Nogata falls in love with Callahan while training , and there is a spark between the two. Zed is in the same room with Sweetchuck and constantly terrorizes him. After a few incidents, Sweetchuck wants to drop out, but Tackleberry convinces him to stay.

The first workout is moderate. Copeland and Blankes harass the cadets. With a few exceptions, the performance is miserable, which is also observed by the committee. An official boxing match between Bud Kirkland and a representative from Mauser's Academy ends with a victory for Lassard's Academy.

Blankes and Copeland send the unprepared cadets to the internship too early on Mauser's instructions. It is a disaster again. A confrontation with perpetrators escalates, Zed's former gang frightens an older female committee member, and Mrs. Fackler puts a police car on the roof of a car chase, which also has two committee members. Copeland and Blankes manipulate mission orders and the computer system in the operations center, but in doing so they reveal themselves as saboteurs.

The last day of the internship should bring the decision. Cadets from both schools are to accompany the governor to an event in a yacht club. Hedges is there as Lassard's representative and can alert Mahoney in time when he sees the preparations for a robbery. Mauser's cadets, on the other hand, lose their nerve when the robbery takes place and the criminals kidnap the governor. Mahoney rushes to help with his colleagues and the cadets on Lassard's orders. After a chase, the governor is rescued, and with his personal approval, Lassard's academy wins the competition.

classification

The main characteristic of most Police Academy films, that the main characters experience many failures at first, but turn things for the better through courageous action, can also be found here. As in the first film, it is police cadets who initially fail completely in their training. The well-known characters from the first two films will be used as instructors. The concept is used in a similar form in the fourth film. The third and fourth films were supposed to be shot one after the other, but since director Jerry Paris passed away, there was a delay.

The characters introduced in the second film are continued. The Kirkland, Zed, Sweetchuck and Proctor families are anchored as an integral part and in some cases continued into the sixth film. As a result, 19 of the total of 24 recurring characters appear here - only the fourth film has such a high number.

The film contains some parallels to the first film. Callahan begins an affair with a cadet again. Mahoney was also approaching an attractive cadet in the first film.

A direct reference to the first film is that Douglas Fackler tries to prevent his wife from pursuing a career in the police force and then rides them all the way to the academy while lying on the hood. There were almost identical scenes in the first film, except that Mrs. Fackler was lying on the roof and Douglas was driving the car.

Another sequel is the re-emergence of the Blue Oyster Bar .

This film contains a few scenes with an emphasis on issues of discrimination and gender equality. Douglas Fackler tries to convince his wife with the argument that police work is dangerous and that her place as his wife is at home, but that doesn't stop her. Upon arrival, Hedges treated the African-American Moses Hightower like a doorman. This immediately puts him in his place.

people

In no other Police Academy film is so heavily relied on well-known characters as in this one. Most of the people known from the first two films reappear. In particular, the character of Debbie Callahan returns and appears in all other films. Zed and Sweetchuck return in their new roles as police cadets. Only Nogata is newly introduced and has another appearance in the successor.

There are therefore only a few people who can only be seen once:

  • Karen Adams ( Shawn Weatherly ): The attractive cadet has been the target of Mahoney's flirting ambitions from the start. But she doesn't give in immediately, even if it is clear that the two are likeable.
  • Hedges ( David Hubland ): He is a cadet and shows clear snobbish traits that are also reminiscent of the American money nobility. For example, he lets his chauffeur take him to the academy while listening to the stock market news and smoking cigarettes with a mouthpiece. His first scene is very reminiscent of a scene with Karen Thompson in the first film. However, he is not her male equivalent, but hardly appears in the middle part of the film. Only at the end can he be seen again because he is the one who discovers what is going on in the yacht club and sounds the alarm.
  • Governor Neilson ( Ed Nelson ): He announces that the state wants to close an academy. Towards the end of the film, gangsters kidnap him. The cadets of Lassards rush to his rescue, and they succeed.

Trivia

The film satirizes the famous shower scene from Alfred Hitchcock's thriller Psycho (1960). Sweetchuck slips into the role of Marion Crane , Zed takes on the evil Norman Bates with a tube of toothpaste .

criticism

The film is counted among the better of the series. At Rotten Tomatoes , it even got 40 percent good ratings (as of December 30, 2019), even ahead of its predecessor. At IMDb, however, it joins the general trend that every film in the series is rated worse than its respective predecessor, because there it was rated with an average of 5.4 out of 10 possible points (as of December 30, 2019).

“Third infusion of the American slapstick series, staged according to the patterns of the forerunners. Rumbling humor and trying-out jokes nip any hint of joke in the bud. "
