Poopó ([ po.o.ˈpo ]) is a town in the Oruro department in the highlands of the South American Andean state of Bolivia .
Location in the vicinity
Poopó is a central place in the district ( Bolivian : Municipio ) Poopó and the administrative seat of the province Poopó and is located at an altitude of 3758 m in the river valley of the Río Poopó , on the railway line from Oruro to Challapata . To the west of the city is Lake Poopó .

Poopó is located on the eastern edge of the Bolivian Altiplano in front of the Cordillera Azanaques , which is part of the Cordillera Central mountain range . The climate is a typical time of day climate in which the mean temperature fluctuations during the day are greater than during the year.
The mean average temperature of the region is around 8 ° C (see climate diagram Poopó) and fluctuates between 3 ° C in June and July and 11 ° C from November to March. The annual precipitation is around 350 mm, with a pronounced dry season from April to October with monthly precipitation below 10 mm, and significant precipitation only from December to March with 50 to 90 mm monthly precipitation.
Transport network
Poopó is 53 kilometers by road south of the departmental capital, Oruro.
The 1,215-kilometer Ruta 1 highway runs through Poopó and begins in the north at Desaguadero on the border with Peru and leads via the large cities of El Alto , Oruro , Potosí and Tarija to Bermejo on the border with Argentina . The northern 680 kilometers of the trunk road from Desaguadero to south of Potosí are paved, as is the southern 210 kilometers from Tarija to Bermejo.

Due to the historical population distribution, the region has a high proportion of Quechua population, in the municipality of Poopó 77.7 percent of the population speak the Quechua language.
