Popovača is a city and a municipality ("općina") in Croatia . According to the 2011 census, the city in the Sisak-Moslavina County has 12,701 inhabitants and is around 65 km from the Croatian capital Zagreb .
geography
Popovača is located in the north of the Sisak-Moslavina County. The city belongs to the historical region of Moslavina and is a good 70 km away from the Croatian-Bosnian-Herzegovinian border . Popovača is located east of the Česma River and the municipality of Velika Ludina . Nearby larger cities are Sisak and Kutina . history
In the area of the Popovača commune, traces of 18 million year old plants and animals were found during excavations in Gornja Jelenska.
The first traces of human life go back to early history . The proximity to ancient Sisak (Siscia) favored the settlement on the edge of the Sisak – Kutina road, where a large complex of villas was built at the time of the Roman Empire . In addition to the excavations in Osekovo, archaeological material of Roman origin was found in other places in today's Popovača municipality, such as Donja Gračenica and Voloder.
Transport and infrastructure
Popovača is located on the Zagreb – Belgrade road , which is developed as the A3 Autocesta in Croatia from Zagreb via Slavonski Brod to the border town of Lipovac on the Croatian-Serbian border. Furthermore, the Državna cesta D36 leads from Popovača via Sisak to Karlovac in central Croatia .
The station in Popovača connects the city with the railway line from (Zagreb–) Dugo Selo - Vinkovci , which continues to Belgrade. Trains run by the HŽ run daily from Zagreb to Novska / Vinkovci.
