Port25 - space for contemporary art - gallery in Mannheim

Port25 - Room for Contemporary Art is a gallery for temporary exhibitions in Mannheim's Jungbusch . Since July 2015, artists from the region have been exhibited together with international artistic positions.

history

The Port25 gallery - space for contemporary art - was created in response to the wish of the Mannheim artists and the cultural office for an appropriate facility in which regional, contemporary visual art can be exhibited. The exhibition space was created as part of a new building for the creative industry center C-HUB in Jungbusch. On the basis of a Europe-wide tender, the operation of the gallery was awarded to Stefanie Kleinsorge. In the new building, completed in 2015, visual artists from the region are shown together with international artistic positions and put up for discussion. The program is neither tied to artists of a certain generation nor to specific artistic media, artistic strategies or attitudes. The focus is on current artistic productions that are relevant in the present. Port25 thus replaced the Stadtgalerie Mannheim , which as an interim solution since 2011 has successfully bridged the period up to the opening of the new exhibition house.

building

The two-storey building designed by hartwig schneider architects integrating two listed brick façades blends in with the industrial character of the port. It complements the new building of the creative industry center C-HUB, which serves as a start-up center. Before the construction of the new gallery, Hafenstrasse No. 25 was part of the Kauffmannmühle founded in 1881 . The two brick facades belonged to a warehouse that was known as the "Yaman Building" after the operator of the import-export business.

The gallery building offers 500 m² of exhibition space and a reception area for a shop with art books and editions as well as for events and offices. The building also houses the St. James café, which is spatially separated from the gallery. On February 2, 2016, the entire building complex received the State Prize for Building Culture, awarded for the first time by the Baden-Württemberg Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure, in the commercial / industrial construction category.

Exhibitions

The first exhibition in Port25 took the spatial proximity to the creative industry center C-HUB as an opportunity to ask about the meaning of everyday things. The exhibition was curated by the director Stefanie Kleinsorge in collaboration with the former director of the Stadtgalerie Mannheim, Benedikt Stegmayer, and its orientation is programmatic.
