Claudia Desgranges

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Claudia Desgranges (born November 17, 1953 in Frankfurt am Main ) is a German painter and installation artist . She is influenced by abstract expressionism and color field painting , but also takes up elements of Informel and American minimalism .

Life

Claudia Desgranges studied painting from 1978 to 1984 at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf , Münster department . From 1983 to 1993 she taught painting at the Westphalian Wilhelms University in Münster. In 1988 she received funding from the Art Fund Foundation . In 2014 Claudia Desgranges received a grant from the Pollock-Krasner Foundation . Desgranges is a member of the German Association of Artists and the West German Association of Artists . The artist lives in Cologne and Munich.

Artistic work

In her non-representational painting, Claudia Desgranges explores the perception processes of colors and their effects. For fifteen years she worked with egg tempera that she mixed herself , which she painted on large canvases . In doing so, she often juxtaposed two colors, some of which were superimposed by applying a glazed brush. Desgranges has been using aluminum plates as image carriers since 2000 , as they do not absorb the paint like canvas, but reproduce it in a pure and unadulterated manner. In places they are roughened or left without color so that they shadowy reflect the room environment and the viewer. The thin aluminum plates are either mounted directly on the wall or stand out from the wall through a substructure. Desgranges uses brushes up to 35 cm wide, and also squeegees with which she applies the thin paint.

The aluminum plates are painted in a purely intuitive way, the choice of colors and the way in which the paint is applied reflect the respective sensitivities of the artist: “If necessary, I also work with both hands, with brushes of different widths dynamizes the image in free rhythm. You can often see where the brush starts or where different brushstrokes intersect. ”The many layers of merging, watery colors and the reflective effect of the image carrier create the impression of a“ dynamic color space experience ”.

Timeline

Time plays a crucial role in Claudia Desgranges' work. It becomes visible in the rhythm of the application of paint and the blurring of the thin colors that flow into one another: “It's about the fleeting in Desgranges' pictures. Not about capturing it, but about depicting the volatility and the blurring of time in itself. ”This becomes particularly clear in the series of works called“ Time Strips ”, which began in 2003. Up to 2.50 meters long, narrow aluminum panels are painted by the artist by placing stripes of color vertically on the panels and blurring them horizontally. The colors used develop from red to yellow, blue, green towards the edge of the picture and, together with the picture carrier, create the impression of a “mist of color” that surrounds the picture: “As if rushing by, we experience the artist's pictures in the room and are tempted to hold on to the individual picture objects almost breathlessly. ”( Gabriele Uelsberg : Chromographic painting In: Zeitstreifen , 2004)

Color diaries

Since 1990, Claudia Desgranges has ended her working day by spreading out the colors last used on that day in a so-called “color diary” on a double page before washing out the brush. They were exhibited for the first time in 2009 in the Museum Burg Wissem in Troisdorf. There are now over 70 of these diaries. They not only serve the artist for self-reflection on her painterly studies, but are also shown in some exhibitions of her works of art, so that the viewer can get a comprehensive insight into her work. Since you can leaf through the color diaries like real books, the impression of a “ flip book ” is created that sets the color impressions shown on the pages in motion.

In this exhibition, Desgranges used slide projection and video as part of the staging for the first time . She had photographed pages from various color diaries and projected them onto the wall as slide projections. In addition, a short film was shown showing urban scenes: “The juxtaposition of film and images shows how memories and impressions flow into my painting. Appearances of reality find their expression in the pictures in abstract form. The film stands for the depot in my head from which I draw. ”Also in other exhibitions, so u. a in the spatial installation “Art and Living” (2010 in Bonn) and in the retrospective “Update” (2014 in various museums) Desgranges plays with the levels of perception and uses video and projections.

Composite Paintings

In the exhibition “Update” from 2014 Desgranges shows for the first time her “Composite Paintings” (in German: “Composite Pictures”), which represent a new phase in her artistic development. She combines individual works to form a new overall composition and thereby relates strong opposites to one another. Calm works contrast with images that appear very moving, matt surfaces with shiny, almost monochrome surfaces meet a bright mix of colors. Most of the “composite paintings” consist of two or three different elements, sometimes both horizontally and vertically, which hang at different distances from the wall, with the effect that they overlap each other. By juxtaposing these different elements, Desegranges challenges the viewer to new experiences: “I want to bring together different levels of perception, bring together different materials. The goal is not to sink into a picture, the eye should wander around. "
