Port-Gentil is the second largest city in Gabon . It has around 136,462 inhabitants (as of 2013) and is the capital of the province of Ogooué-Maritime .

geography

The port city is located on the east side of an elongated island in the Ogooué delta , the country's most important river. Port-Gentil is only about 80 km south of the equator on the Gulf of Guinea . The Cap Lopez northwest of Port-Gentil is the island nation of Sao Tome and Principe with about 250 km from the next.

history

At the end of the 15th century, the Portuguese were the first Europeans to reach Mandji Island on Cap Lopez, where today's Port-Gentil was to emerge much later.

On June 1, 1862, King Denis Rapontchombo signed the Treaty of Cap Lopez and Nazaré with France , giving France control of the area. In 1873 his successor, King Nyanguényona , finally ceded the area completely to France. At that time there were only several small villages in the area.

From 1880 onwards the French settled here permanently, and they established a base at Cap Lopez. The city of Port-Gentil was ultimately to develop from this base. As early as 1886 the settlement had 18 warehouses, a customs post and two shops with goods for daily needs.

After the settlement had suffered a lot from competition from other European trading posts in sub-Saharan Africa in the early years, over time, French and English and German trading companies also settled there (including Woermann ).

In 1915 the settlement was officially named Port-Gentil in honor of Émile Gentil. Nevertheless, the settlement did not develop into a real city until the 1930s.

The Stade de Port-Gentil stadium was one of the four stadiums in the country that hosted the 2017 African Cup of Nations .

Economy and Infrastructure

The city is a center of fishing and overseas trade in products from the hinterland - especially cocoa and precious wood .

A number of companies have settled in the city that mainly produce canned fish and wood products ( plywood ).

The oil wealth of Gabon is not left its mark on Port-Gentil: the city, with its refinery become the center of the oil industry of the country. Port-Gentil International Airport is located in Port-Gentil . There are flights to Libreville and other national destinations from there. Port-Gentil is not connected to the road network due to its location in the impassable estuary of the Ogoué . Shipping and air traffic therefore play a major role.

Twin cities

Alicante has had a partnership with Wenzhou , China , since 2010 .

religion

Port-Gentil is the seat of the Diocese of Port-Gentil .
