Przasnysz ( German Pczaßnitz 1939–1945 Praschnitz ) is a city in Poland in the Masovian Voivodeship . It is located about 100 km north of Warsaw on the Węgierka and is the administrative seat of the Powiat Przasnyski . The city occupies an area of ​​2516 hectares. In 2004 the city had 18,093 inhabitants.

history

Przasnysz received city rights in 1427. After the partition of Poland , the city belonged to the Russian Empire . During the First World War , the 1st Battle of Przasnysz took place here from mid to late February 1915 and the 2nd Battle of Przasnysz on July 13 and 14, 1915 . With the re-establishment of the independent Polish state in 1919, Przasnysz also came back to Poland. In 1939 the city was annexed by the Greater German Reich in violation of international law , renamed Praschnitz and the seat of the district of the same name in the province of East Prussia . Afterwards people of German origin from the Baltic States and Romania were settled here. In 1945 Praschnitz was captured by the Red Army and returned to Poland.
