The Prinses Christina was a double-ended ferry operated by the Dutch shipping company Provinciale Stoombootdiensten in Zeeland, which used the ship in ferry traffic on the Scheldt .

history

The voor by the Bureau Scheepsbouw in Bloemendaal designed ferry was under the hull number 594 on the shipyard Machinefabriek "De Merwede" en Scheepswerf built. The ship ordered on July 11, 1966 was the first of two almost identical ferries. The keel was laid on December 22, 1966, the launch on October 31, 1967. The ferry was christened on the same day . Godmother was the wife of the Queen's commissioner in the province of Zeeland , van Aartsen-Stap. The ship was named after the Dutch princess Christina . It was completed at the Nieuwe Waterweg shipyard in Schiedam . The ferry was handed over to the Provinciale Stoombootdiensten shipping company in Zeeland on April 23, 1968. The construction costs amounted to 19,428,000  guilders . Another 15 million guilders were invested in adapting the infrastructure in the ferry ports in Kruiningen and Perkpolder.

On June 4, 1968, the ferry began ferry traffic on the Scheldt between Kruiningen and Perkpolder. It was used on the line until 1997. After the ship was replaced in May 1997 by the Prinses Juliana , which previously operated between Vlissingen and Breskens , it served as a reserve until 2003.

The ferry was the first of the shipping company to have two vehicle decks. This served to expand capacity on the ferry routes across the Scheldt as a result of the increasing demand in the 1960s.

The ship proved to be relatively susceptible to wind. In 1970, the ferry's underwater hull was modified to remedy the problem.

Technical data and equipment

The propulsion of the ship was diesel electrically by two AEG -electric each with 6000  PS performance , each having a fixed propeller drives at both ends of the vessel. For electricity generation were five four-stroke - eight-cylinder - diesel engines of the manufacturer MAN (type: G8V30 / 45 ATL) each, each with 1,700 horsepower available a generator of the manufacturer AEG (type: G106 / 56) 1150  kVA apparent power drives. In normal operation, four of the generator sets were used, the fifth served as a reserve. The generator sets were replaced in 1999 by those made by Volvo Penta . The ship was equipped with two transverse thruster systems , one at each end.

The power supply for on-board operations was ensured by four four-stroke eight-cylinder diesel engines from the manufacturer MAN, each with 296 hp, which powered four generators from the manufacturer AEG, each with an apparent power of 200 kVA.

The ferry had two continuous vehicle decks. On both vehicle decks there was a combined total of 2500 m², 12200 m² with four lanes on the 110 meter long and 12.6 meter wide lower deck and 1280 m² with six lanes on the upper 13.2 meter wide deck. The ferry could load 185 cars. There was space for 79 cars on the lower deck and 106 on the upper deck. Trucks could also be transported on the lower deck. The usable height of the upper deck was 2.10 meters, that of the lower deck 4.20 meters. The two car decks were locked with hydraulically operated doors that opened upwards. The access width to the decks was 7.78 meters. The upper vehicle deck was open at the ends. The ship was initially approved for 1000 passengers. Later the passenger capacity was reduced to 600 passengers.

Above the vehicle deck there was a deck with the facilities for the passengers, including two salons with 150 seats each. There was a wheelhouse at both ends above the passenger deck. On the intermediate deck below the vehicle decks, facilities such as cabins, lounges and showers were available for the ship's crew of up to 22 , including the engine room .

Whereabouts of the ship

In March 2003 the ferry was sold to Italy together with the Prinses Juliana and the Prins Willem-Alexander . The gates closing the lower deck of the vehicle have been removed and ramps have been installed at both ends. Until the beginning of 2006, the ship was used under the flag of Portugal as Ladies Matacena in ferry traffic between Reggio Calabria and Messina . The ship was then chartered to Portugal, but was no longer used as a ferry. In December 2012 it was towed to Aliağa , Turkey , where it was scrapped by the end of February 2013.
