The Prins Willem-Alexander was a double-ended ferry of the Dutch shipping company Provinciale Stoombootdiensten in Zeeland, which used the ship in ferry traffic on the Scheldt .

history

The ferry was ordered on May 17, 1968, just a few weeks after the Prinses Christina , the shipping company's first ferry with two vehicle decks, went into service. It was under the hull number 758 on the shipyard Scheepswerf en Machinefabriek "De Merwede" built. The keel was laid in September 1968 and the launch took place on July 5, 1969, after the ferry had previously been christened . It was named after the Dutch Prince Willem-Alexander . The ship was completed at the Nieuwe Waterweg shipyard in Schiedam . The construction costs amounted to 20.2 million guilders .

The ferry was handed over to the Provinciale Stoombootdiensten shipping company in Zeeland on March 11, 1970. There were considerations to use the ship on the Vlissingen - Breskens route . For this purpose, the superstructure of the ship, which largely corresponded to the previously built Prinses Christina , was adapted for use on the ferry route in the area of the Scheldt estuary. For example, there were no longer the openings in the side wall at the level of the lower car deck. The ferry, put into service in March 1970, was then used together with the Prinses Christina on the Kruiningen – Perkpolder route, where it operated until March 2003. It was only used temporarily on the route between Vlissingen and Breskens in August 1993.

Technical data and equipment

The propulsion of the ship was diesel electrically by two AEG -electric each with 2210  kW power , each having a fixed propeller drives at both ends of the vessel. Four eight - cylinder four - stroke diesel engines from MAN were available for generating electricity, each of which powered a generator from AEG. In 1999 the generator sets were replaced by those made by Volvo Penta .

The power supply for on-board operations was ensured by four diesel generator sets.

The ship was equipped with two continuous vehicle decks. On both decks together 2427 m² were available for vehicles, 1200 m² with four lanes on the lower deck and 1227 m² with six lanes on the upper deck. The ferry could transport 185 cars. There was space for 79 cars on the lower deck and 106 on the upper deck. Trucks could also be transported on the lower deck. The ship was initially approved for 1000 passengers. Later the passenger capacity was reduced to 600 passengers.

Above the vehicle decks there was a deck with the facilities for the passengers and above it a wheelhouse at each end . The wheelhouses had been redesigned and did not match those of the Prinses Christina . Facilities for the ship's crew of up to 22 people, such as cabins, lounges and showers, were available on the intermediate deck below the vehicle decks, including the engine room .

Since the Prinses Christina turned out to be relatively susceptible to wind , the underwater hull of the Prins Willem-Alexander was modified during the construction phase so that the ferry was less susceptible to cross winds.

Whereabouts of the ship

On March 29, 2003, the ship was sold to Italy together with the Prinses Christina, built in 1968, and the Prinses Juliana, built in 1986 , and used as Athos Matacena in ferry traffic between Reggio Calabria and Messina and Villa San Giovanni and Messina until the beginning of 2006 . In December 2012 it was towed to Aliağa , Turkey , where it was scrapped until early February 2013.
