The Prinses Juliana is a former double-ended ferry of the Dutch shipping company Provinciale Stoombootdiensten in Zeeland, which used the ship in ferry traffic on the Scheldt .

history

The voor by the Bureau Scheepsbouw in Bloemendaal designed ferry was under the hull number 637 at the shipyard De Merwede built. The construction costs amounted to 58.5 million guilders . However, this did not cover costs for the shipyard, so that they suffered a financial loss due to the construction of the ferry.

The keel was laid on December 5, 1984, the launch on September 5, 1985, after the ship had previously been christened. Godmother was the former Queen of the Netherlands and namesake of the ship Juliana . The ship was delivered on January 6, 1986 and put into service on the Vlissingen - Breskens route in March of that year . It was the first ferry with two vehicle decks on this route.

Due to various technical problems, the ship was withdrawn from the route at the end of September 1986 and repaired in a shipyard. From the beginning of February 1987 it was used again on the route between Vlissingen and Breskens, where it operated with a short interruption from the end of September to the beginning of December 1995 (during this time the ferry served the route Kruiningen - Perkpolder). The ferry was replaced in May 1997 by the new Prins Johan Friso and in turn replaced the Prinses Christina on the Kruiningen – Perkepolder route. Here the ship was used together with the Prins Willem-Alexander until March 15, 2003 . It then drove for a short time for BBA Fast Ferries, which had taken over the ferry traffic from Provinciale Stoombootdiensten in Zeeland on the Vlissingen – Breskens route.

Technical data and equipment

The ship is driven diesel-electrically by two Holec electric motors, each with an output of 4000  kW , which act on a fixed propeller at both ends of the ship. For electricity generation are six six-cylinder - diesel engines of Stork - Wärtsilä , each with 1,765 kW power. The engines are throttled to 1440 kW each. They drive Holec generators with an apparent power of 1500  kVA . Motors and generators are housed redundantly in two machine rooms. An emergency generator with 173 kVA apparent power was also installed.

The ship was the last one of the shipping company with fixed propellers. Propeller pods were used to drive the following ferries . The ship is equipped with an electrically powered transverse thruster with an output of 1100 kW at each end.

The ferry has two continuous vehicle decks with five lanes each. The capacity is 185 cars. Trucks can also be transported on the lower vehicle deck. The maximum payload is 465 t. The vehicle decks are locked. At each end there were gates that opened upwards.

The passenger capacity of the ferry is 1000 people. The passenger facilities are located on the deck above the upper vehicle deck. Two salons with a total of 394 seats are available here. 176 additional seats are available on the outside deck.

The ship is set up for 14 crew members . Lounge rooms for the ship's crew are located on the deck below the lower vehicle deck.

Whereabouts of the ship

At the end of March 2003 the ferry was sold to Italy together with the Princess Christina and the Prince Willem-Alexander . The gates closing the lower deck of the vehicle have been removed and ramps have been installed at both ends. The ferry was used until the beginning of 2006 as Amedeo Matacena under the flag of Portugal in ferry traffic between Reggio Calabria and Messina . After a sale of the ferry failed, she was in Messina launched .
