Dom Prosper-Louis-Pascal Guéranger OSB (born April 4, 1805 in Sablé-sur-Sarthe , † January 30, 1875 in Solesmes , 5 kilometers from Sablé-sur-Sarthe) was the founder of a new liturgical movement from the middle of 19th century and first abbot of the re-established Benedictine monastery of Solesmes .

Life

He was ordained a priest on October 7, 1827 . In 1832 he acquired a Maurin priory near Solesmes that had been abandoned for years . After almost a year of renovation, he was able to open the monastery on July 11, 1833. Six years later - on July 26, 1837 - he made his profession in St. Paul in Rome and was appointed by Pope Gregory XVI. on September 1 of the same year appointed first abbot of Solesmes and at the same time superior general of the French Benedictine Congregation , which is still to be reformed . He also endeavored to reform the congregation based on tradition.

From the mother abbey of Saint Pierre in Solesmes, the monastery was founded at the sanctuary of Martin von Tours in Ligugé (1853), St. Marie-Madeleine in Marseille (1865) and the nuns' abbey of St. Cécile near Solesmes (1866). The highly qualified, influential and reform-minded liturgist Guéranger successfully endeavored to replace the special liturgical forms and individual rites of all French dioceses with the binding introduction of the Roman rite that came into force on July 14, 1570 with the Apostolic Seal of Pope Pius V. Quo primum . Quo primum forbade all rites that had not existed for at least 200 years. On the question of the dogmatization of the Immaculate Conception of Mary (which was carried out in 1854 by Pope Pius IX ) Guéranger was included in the deliberation process of the French episcopate. He greatly promoted dogmatization in France and later defended it in numerous small letters. Prosper Guéranger was considered an ultramontanist . This is particularly evident in his extremely vehement - sometimes polemical - defense of the Pope's infallibility, which was decided upon at the First Vatican Council in 1870 and which was also dogmatized. Gueranger also ideally promoted the founding of a German Benedictine congregation based on the strictly monastic style of Solesmes, which was then implemented from the Beuron monastery from 1863 .

Restitution of Gregorian chant

Since the middle of the 19th century, Prosper Guéranger campaigned strongly for the restitution of Gregorian chant , in particular by commissioning his confreres Paul Jausions and Joseph Pothier to collect and compare old Neumen manuscripts . As a result of this work, the Directory Chori was created in his abbey in 1864. As the first chorale book of the restitution, it represents an important milestone in the rediscovery of the meaning of neumes.

Beatification process

In 2005 the Vatican accepted Guéranger's beatification process.
