Powder Tower (Quedlinburg)
The Powder Tower is a medieval defense tower of the listed city fortifications of the city of Quedlinburg in Saxony-Anhalt .
location
The tower is located on the property of the Schlosshotel Zum Markgrafen in the western part of the old city fortifications of the historic Quedlinburg old town on the western side of Hohen Strasse, from which a small alley leads towards the tower. A little further south is the Kruschitzkyturm .
History and architecture
The powder tower has three floors and was built from sandstone blocks on a square floor plan. It reaches a height of 24 meters. To the east towards the city, the two lower floors have an opening in the form of pointed arches , the upper floor in the form of a coupled cloverleaf . The spire is octagonal and slated. There are four roof bay windows with their own gables .
At the end of the 20th and beginning of the 21st century, the tower had become dilapidated and had been scaffolded since 1980. The top of the tower collapsed in parts and leaned more and more to one side. The tower has been refurbished for more than € 100,000 since 2012. For the restoration of the completely destroyed wooden spire, the German Foundation for Monument Protection granted € 27,500 in January 2013. The scaffolding had already been removed beforehand. The actual restoration work began in early July 2013. In addition to the state of Saxony-Anhalt and the district of Harz , private donors also participated in the financing. At the beginning of August 2013, the new top was put on and covered with around 3,000 to 3,500 slates by the company Dachbaukunst Quedlinburg. The wooden top is nine meters high, contains 7.5 m³ of wood and weighs about six tons. It had been put together on the ground by a carpentry from Ilsenburg and placed on the tower with a special crane. The wall crowns of the tower had previously been repaired . On the top of the tower was a weather vane of copper installed.
