Punitz is a village and a cadastral municipality in the Tobaj municipality in the Güssing district in Burgenland .

geography

About 8 kilometers from Güssing is Punitz, a classic scattered settlement , the Punitz Bach and the Haselgraben flow through Punitz, the Limbach (Urbersdorf) flows on the edge of the village.

The Punitzer Wald is the largest contiguous forest area in southern Burgenland and covers the tertiary hill and terraced land between Strem and Pinka.

history

The establishment of the place dates back to the year 1551. The name of the place was written in the documents in different ways:

In 1553 Ponytz, 1555 Ponych, 1587, 1595 and 1599 Ponycz, 1588, 1589 and 1608 Ponicz, 1750 Ponitz ... 1570 and on the municipal seal around 1823 Bodnitz, in the 18th century Punics and Punitz.

It is believed that the name is derived from the Croatian word podni (= soil) and means valley settlement, since the first Slavic settlers first settled in the valley.

In 2001 celebrations for the 450th anniversary were celebrated in Punitz. On this occasion, a chronicle of Punitz was published by the 1950s vintage von Punitz, under the direction of Franz Marth.

Due to the generally strong decline in the number of pupils in recent years, the primary schools in Punitz, Tobaj and Deutsch Tschantschendort were merged in 2010. At that time, the number of students in these places was as follows: 15 in Punitz, 10 in Tobaj, and 26 in Deutsch Tschantschendorf. The lessons for all pupils in the Tobaj community continued in the primary school Schule Deutsch Tschantschendort. Under the aegis of the then mayor of the Tobaj community, Manfred Kertelics, the Punitz elementary school was converted into the village center. The village center now houses a culture hall for all events as well as a coffee house. In addition, a new fire station was built next to it, which houses garages, changing rooms and a command room on an area of around 130 square meters. The two buildings were connected to an adjacent biomass plant, which is also available to residents. The old fire station was sold to the Oberwart settlement cooperative, and living space was created for three more residential units. The proceeds from the sale of the old fire station were used for work at the former elementary school.

Population development

Population growth Punitz 2019

As can be seen in the graphic, Punitz has experienced a negative population development in the last few decades, as have the surrounding villages and the rest of the entire southern Burgenland.

America migrations

One factor for the negative population development were the waves of emigration to America between 1900 and 1960, i.e. in the inter-war and post-war years. "The 'American' Punitzer commemorated their congregation in southern Burgenland: In America, collections were made for the church, the fire brigade, the cemetery, etc. Mainly through the

Donations to the relatives at home, the expansion of the Punitz community and the modernization of agriculture were strongly promoted. The 'American Cross' was donated by the emigrants to thank them for the happy crossing.

Other factors and prognosis

But there are a number of other reasons why the population here, as well as in other (especially) rural regions, is declining - such as B. low fertility, urbanization and rural exodus . In the Güssing district, the decline in population between 2016 and 2017 was the highest in all of Austria with a population decrease of 0.9%. Only 14 of 40 communities in the districts of Güssing and Jennersdorf were able to record a population increase during this period. While the entire Burgenland will grow to over 350,000 people by the year 2100, the south of the country will in no way benefit from this increase. "By 2045 the three southern districts will lose almost 3,000 people, and even 7,000 by 2075. Güssing and Jennersdorf are losing a lot, and Oberwart is also shrinking." The overall trend for southern Burgenland is also reflected in the population development of Punitz. "Growth is generally only possible through immigration, because the Burgenland birth rate is negative".

While relatively cheap land prices and the scenic beauty in Punitz are an attraction factor, there are other factors such as: B. the hitherto slow internet infrastructure as well as low educational and job opportunities, which reduce the attractiveness. If one assumes that the Güssing district will shrink by 12 percent by 2031 (based on the 2001 population), and if this trend is applied to Punitz, the result is that in Punitz in 2031 around 292 Residents will live. Even if the population decline in Punitz has not been as dramatic as in other municipalities in southern Burgenland (such as Heiligenbrunn, which has lost around a fifth of the population in just 16 years), there is still a foreseeable negative long-term trend, which affects the Punitz population concerns.
