Systematics and distribution
The genus Purdiaea was established by Jules Émile Planchon in 1846 in the London Journal of Botany , volume 5, p. 250, plate 9. The generic name Purdiaea honors the Scottish botanist William Purdie (1817-1857).
It had previously been placed in the Cyrillaceae family ; after phylogenetic findings about the closer relationship with the genus of cinnamon ( Clethra ), however, it was moved to the family of Scheineller plants (Clethraceae).
There are about 14 species in the genus Purdiaea , twelve of which are endemic to Cuba . Two other species are native to South America , one species is native to Central America ( Belize , Guatemala, and Panama ).
Here is the list of Cuban species according to R. Berazaín Iturralde and the two other species:
- Purdiaea belizensis (ACSm. & Standl.) JLThomas (Syn .: Schizocardia belizensis A.C.Sm. & Standl. ): It occurs in Guatemala, Honduras, Belize and Panama.
- Purdiaea bissei Berazaín : This endemic occurs only in eastern Cuba in the Sierra de Moa.

- Purdiaea ekmanii Vict. - Endemic to Cuba.
- Purdiaea maestrensis Borhidi & Catasús - Endemic to Cuba.
- Purdiaea microphylla Britton & P.Wilson - Endemic to Cuba.
- Purdiaea moaensis Vict. - Endemic to Cuba.
- Purdiaea nipensis Vict. - Endemic to Cuba. There are two varieties.
- Purdiaea nutans planch. : It occurs in Colombia, Ecuador, Peru and Venezuela.
- Purdiaea ophiticola Vict. - Endemic to Cuba.
