Purgatory was an American metal band from Cleveland , Ohio that formed in 1984 and split in 1989.

history

Purgatory was founded in 1984 by singer Jeffrey Lewis Hetrick aka "Jeff Hatrix". In January 1985, the band recorded their first EP at Brittain Square Studios , which contains four songs. The group made their first appearance in May at the Old Brooklyn Tavern. It was followed by other appearances together with Metal Church , Lizzy Borden and Fates Warning , while the EP sold the entire edition of 1,000 units. Towards the end of the year, the group reached a contract with Auburn Records before recording their debut album Tied to the Trax at Suma Recording Studios and releasing it in 1986. In Europe the album was released on the German label Steamhammer Records . Before the release, guitarist Greg Perry left the band and was only briefly replaced by Ed Whittingler. After Randy Gonce left the band in May 1986, Purgatory was now completely without a guitarist. Frank Romano and Dave Felton joined the band as new guitarists before Perry returned and Felton had to leave. Thereupon tours with Destructor , At War and Possessed were completed. In 1988 Perry finally left the band, whereupon Tony Ross joined the band, while Andy Boyer was added as the new singer. With this line-up, the EP Dr. Pain before the group broke up. After the breakup, Hetrick formed the band Hatrix . Together with Felton and some members of the last Purgatory line-up, he also founded Mushroomhead . For a concert to mark the 20th anniversary of Auburn Records in 2004, the band came together again and consisted of Hetrick, Perry, bassist Mark Alexander and drummer Kenny Easterly.

style

According to Martin Popoff in his book The Collector's Guide of Heavy Metal Volume 2: The Eighties , Tied to the Trax offers technically demanding and traditional metal. If Hetrick fell into falsetto singing, it would sound wrongly sung.

According to thethrashmetalguide.com, the band play a melodic mix of power, speed and thrash metal that is reminiscent of German bands like Warrant , Iron Angel (especially the second album), Tyrant and early Helloween .

Jens Reimnitz spoke to Hetrick in a horror infernal interview about an alleged resemblance to Omen , Ruthless and Wrath . In his answer, Hetrick distinguished between the instrumentation, which resembled that of Agent Steel , Iron Maiden and Mercyful Fate , and the vocal, which would be "somewhere between Savatage and Slayer ". His personal preferences are Judas Priest , Iron Maiden and Ian Gillan .

According to Götz Kühnemund from Metal Hammer, the band on Tied to the Trax play rough US Metal, which is comparable to the music of Bloodlust , Ruthless and Wrath. In addition, the group often reminds of Omen, with the singing in particular showing parallels to that of JD Kimball.
