Sound value and transcription
The Qaf has no equivalent in German. It is the unvoiced plosive uvular [ q ] , wherein the rear part of the tongue with the uvula forms a seal. In Arab city dialects (. B. for Cairo and Damascus ) may be completed in so-called book words instead of [q] a glottal stop [ ʔ ] (vocal paragraph, otherwise in Arabic. Font with Hamza written) spoken. Qaf is also spoken as an emphatic consonant in some dialects and obscures the surrounding vowels.
In the DMG romanization, Qaf is reproduced with “q”. In the non-academic context, the Duden recommends the transcription with "k". In domains , internet forums and when using chat programs , the number “ 9 ” often represents the Qaf.
