The Río Chancay (in the upper reaches of the Río Vichaycocha ) is an approximately 115 km long tributary of the Pacific Ocean in the central west of Peru north of the capital Lima . The Chancay culture , which existed between 1300 and 1450 on the Río Chancay and in the neighboring river valleys, was named after the river.

River course

The Río Chancay rises in the Western Cordillera , on the eastern flank of Cerro Agascancha at an altitude of about 4750  m . In the headwaters , the two outflow-regulated lakes Laguna Chalhuacocha Chica ( 4672  m ) and Laguna Chalhuacocha ( 4593  m ) are located on the course of the river. The Río Chancay flows 25 km in a south-westerly direction. He passes the villages of San Miguel de Vichaycocha and Pacaraos . The Río Baños flows into the river on the left. Over the next 40 kilometers, this turns towards the west-southwest. At the town of Acos , the Río Carac meets the Río Chancay from the right. At river kilometer 57 the Río Añasmayo flows into the Río Chancay from the left, at river km 48 the Río Huataya from the right. In the last 45 kilometers, the Río Chancay initially turns to the southwest, later to the south-southwest. At river kilometer 20 he leaves the mountains and reaches the coastal lowlands. There it is lined with irrigated agricultural areas. The provincial capital Huaral is located 15 kilometers above the mouth, 2.5 km from the right bank of the river. The Río Chancay reaches the sea 5 km south-southeast of the city of Chancay and 52 km north of Lima.

Catchment area

The catchment area of the Río Chancay covers an area of 3095 km². It extends over the Huaral province in the Lima administrative region . The catchment area borders on that of the Río Huaura to the north and that of the Río Chillón to the south . In the east the watershed runs along the western cordillera to the catchment area of the Río Mantaro .

Hydrology

The mean discharge at the Santo Domingo gauge at river kilometer 39 is 15.4 m³ / s. The highest measured discharge value was 484 m³ / s, the lowest was 2 m³ / s. The flow rate fluctuates very strongly. The months of July, August and September have the lowest rainfall. The wettest months are January, February and March.
