The Radegast is a left tributary of the Stepenitz . It rises in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania in the north-west Mecklenburg district , a little south of Gadebusch in a field wood. The Radegast spring is a limestone tuff spring. The limestone-rich and clear water is characterized by a high oxygen content. These areas are mainly populated by tufa-forming mosses from the Cratoneurion commutati association . Another source stream rises on the northeastern outskirts of Wakenstädt.

description

The Radegast has a running length of approx. 34 km. The Radegast water catchment area covers an area of approx. 190 km². It extends in the south to the Krembz / Groß Salitz area (Ellerbäk tributary), in the east to the Vietlübber See (Seegraben tributary) and in the northwest to Roduchelstorf. The largest tributary is the Tiene with a partial catchment area of around 40 km². Significant tributaries are the stream from Wakenstädt (second source tributary), the Ellerbäk, the Stresdorfer Bach, the Tiene, the Winkelbäk and the Cordshagener Bach. In addition to the natural tributaries, the Radegast is fed by a large number of springs in the area of the valley edge as well as by connected ditches and drains.

To the south of the road to Wakenstädt, a longer section of the Radegast had been piped up until 2006, and the uncased sections had been severely straightened. After a renaturation project, a naturally meandering stream bed was created here again, so that the entire source area is again close to nature.

As far as the Neddersee north of the town of Gadebusch, the Radegast is still heavily straightened today. After crossing the Neddersee, the Radegast flows quite strongly meandering in a northerly direction via Rehna to Börzow , where the river flows into the Stepenitz .

Watershed

The headwaters of the Radegast lie on the North Sea-Baltic watershed : While the Radegast flows in a northerly direction over the Stepenitz and the Trave to the Baltic Sea , the water reaches the Schilde , which rises just a few hundred meters further (south) east, over the Schaale , Sude and Elbe the North Sea .

natural reserve

The Radegast has been designated as a nature reserve Radegasttal by the state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania . As an FFH area (Fauna-Flora-Habitat) it is part of the European Natura 2000 network.
