Rags is an American television film , which on behalf of Nickelodeon was produced. The film is based on the fairy tale Cinderella , but the plot has been moved to the present day and the lost glass slipper has been replaced by the demo CD.

action

The orphan boy Charlie Prince works in his late mother's " diner " and lives with his loveless and greedy stepfather Arthur and his spoiled sons Lloyd and Andrew. But Charlie has a dream, he really wants to become a singer. He is vocal talent and writes his own songs. One day he is seen by Shawn, the sound engineer from Majesty Records in New York , who predicts that he will next see him on an album cover. Charlie then tries everything to earn the $ 2,000 he needs to buy back his late mother's piano. When Charlie is supposed to bring a demo tape to Majesty Records for his stepbrothers, he runs into superstar Kadee Worth. Kadee is a famous international singer and the daughter of Majesty Records mogul Reginald Worth. She has everything you can imagine; she can afford the most expensive clothes, is loved and admired by everyone and is in a relationship with the star Finn. But Kadee is not happy because she is only with Finn for the public. She finally wants to be independent and make her own music and not just sing her father's songs.

After clashing with Kadee, Charlie comes across a job posting as a janitor at Majesty Records. With the help of Shawn, whom he meets there again, he gets the job. While at work he sings ( Hands Up ) and Shawn decides to help him record a demo tape. Meanwhile, Kadee pursues Charlie because he is inspiring to her. She follows him to the antique shop and learns that he, like her, has lost his mother. She shows him her songs and Charlie is delighted with the songs. That's why he takes Kadee into town to show her that she can make her own music and sing if she wants to. She invites him to the masquerade ball out of gratitude, but Charlie cannot go because Arthur forbids him. He himself goes there with his sons so that they should become famous. But Charlie also sneaks to the ball. There Shawn gives him his demo CD. When the planned band cannot perform, Shawn announces Charlie under the stage name Rags . Charlie sings his demo song and everyone is delighted, especially Kadee. The two get closer and kiss before Charlie suddenly leaves the ball, as Arthur leaves the party and shouldn't notice that Charlie was also at the masquerade ball. The last thing Charlie says to Kadee is that she should dare to make her own music. While running out, Charlie loses his demo CD, which Kadee then finds.

Kadee is desperate because she is desperate to find out who Rags is. She decides to do an auditing in hopes of hearing the voice or song again. Andrew also learns about the casting because he overhears a conversation between Lloyd and Charlie in which Lloyd tells Charlie that he knows that this is Rags . Then Andrew decides to become Rags himself . He steals the book in which Charlie writes his songs and locks Charlie in a closet. Then he goes to the casting and says he can convince Kadee that he is Rags . Charlie escapes from the closet, but is late for the casting. At the party for Andrew, Charlie is heartbroken and is about to leave the event when Kadee asks him to stay. She goes on stage to introduce the new Star Rags . However, she does not introduce Andrew as Rags , but announces that Charlie is really Rags . Charlie is speechless and goes on stage to ask Kadee how she knew. She replies with a smile that before he disappeared, Rags told her to dare to make her own music. It was precisely with these words that Charlie gave her courage. Charlie starts to sing, but then pauses and asks Kadee to sing her own songs, which she does. Lloyd apologizes to Charlie and tells him that his mother bequeathed him the "Diner" and not Arthur.

Kadee breaks up with Finn and Charlie and they start dating. The two appear on many magazine covers. At the end they sing the song Me And You Against The World in the "Diner". Lloyd is seen as a back-up dancer while Arthur and Andrew clean the toilets.
