Rainer von zur Mühlen

Rainer Adalbert Heinrich von zur Mühlen (born July 25, 1943 in Berlin ) is a German security consultant and planner for companies, specialist book author, publisher and editor. He is the founder of the security consulting and data center planning company von zur Mühlen'sche GmbH (VZM), TeMedia Verlags GmbH and SIMEDIA Akademie GmbH .

Life

Rainer von zur Mühlen is the second son of Heinrich von zur Mühlen and his wife Erika, b. Rye.

Von zur Mühlen studied economics , business psychology and education as well as law in Bochum and Cologne . Originally, he wanted to become an auditor. When he discovered that auditors had little or no in-depth knowledge of IT , he applied to a computer manufacturer while studying in Cologne, who accepted him into a trainee program. He learned to program and operate on mainframes and had the idea of ​​how attackers could manipulate the software in such a way that they could enrich themselves. In doing so, he found ways of avoiding a discovery through the revision.

The head of the test data center carried out appropriate tests with him through test runs of the program manipulations. All attempts worked and proof of the risk of computer crime in the mainframe world was provided. The computer manufacturer engaged him as early as 1969 in his think tank for future research on everything to do with EDP.

Von zur Mühlen developed revision techniques how to uncover such manipulations and gave a lecture for the manufacturer at the annual conference of its key account customers on the development of curricula for the training and further education of IT auditors. This led to spontaneous consulting assignments from three major banks, a chemical company and a housing association. The consultancy started during the third semester.

Von zur Mühlen wrote a diploma thesis on the subject of computer crime - dangers and countermeasures , which was published by Luchterhand in 1972 as the world's first monograph on this subject. The print run of 5,400 copies was sold out after 18 months. In it, he describes the circumstances of 36 cases of computer crime that occurred between 1967 and 1972 and explains how computer crime can be prevented with technical and organizational measures.

From his sole proprietorship, a reorganization in 1972 resulted in von zur Mühlen'sche GmbH , security consulting and data center planning . With his almost 40-strong team of permanently employed computer scientists and engineers, he now advises large and medium-sized companies. SIMEDIA Akademie GmbH was founded in 1982 and developed into a provider of seminars, meetings, forums and congresses in the field of security. In 1974 he founded the information service security consultant at Handelsblatt Verlag , which he and his partner Peter Stürmann bought out of Handelsblatt Verlag in 1999 and has since been published twice a month by TeMedia Verlag. He took Stürmann into the management of his group of companies in 1985.

From 1977 von zur Mühlen was also a member of the founding board of the Bonn Society for Data Protection and Data Security (GDD) and is a founding member and chairman of the Federal Association of Independent German Security Consultants and Engineers (BdSI) founded in 1995. With his team at VZM GmbH, he is involved in the further development and updating of the IT-Grundschutz catalogs of the Federal Office for Information Security (BSI). He is also a member of the TÜViT Certification Advisory Board . Among other things, in the spring of 1992 he belonged to the group of experts who, contrary to the emerging international hysteria, questioned the danger of spreading the " Michelangelo " computer virus.

He has been married to a now retired teacher since 1975 and has a daughter and a son.
