Rapolas Jakimavicius ( Russian Рафал Яхимович ; born October 20 . Jul / 1. November  1893 greg. In Vilnius ; † 19th February 1961 ) was a Lithuanian sculptor and university lecturer .

Life

Jakimavičius studied 1913–1915 in Trutnev's drawing school in Vilnius and then worked in Antoni Wiwulski's sculpture studio until his death in 1919. He also taught at the Vilnius trade school until 1919. He then studied 1919–1922 and 1923–1926 with Ferdynand Ruszczyc at Vilnius University . There were also study visits to the Art Academy in Krakow (1922–1923), Paris (1925) and Italy (1927). After the German-Soviet War , Jakimavičius taught at the Vilnius Art Academy from 1944 until his death (from 1947 as a lecturer ).

Jakimavičius participated in exhibitions from 1916. He created the Death of Icarus (1919), the Caryatid (1922) and the Battle with the Centaur (1925). His design for the Adam Mickiewicz - Monument in front of the Vilnius St. Anne's Church at the Neris 1926 won the second prize. The bronze statue of Grand Duke Vytautas in the brick Gothic St. Nicholas Church in Vilnius Old Town was made in 1930. He created portrait sculptures by Władysław Syrokomla (1930), Tadas Vrublevskis (1930), Petras Vaičiūnas (1931), Vincas Krėvė-Mickevičitė (1941) and Eugenijsos (1941) ). In 1943 he designed the bronze bas-relief for Father Pranas Bieliauskas of the Gate of Dawn . In 1945 he took part in Meltschakow's memorial of the 1200 guardsmen of the 11th Guard Army for the fallen in the storm on Königsberg in what would later be Kaliningrad on Gwardeiski Prospect . He designed tombs in the Rasos cemetery for Tadas Vrublevskis and others, as well as statues in Vilnius churches.
