The Ratsgymnasium is the oldest of the three Gladbeck high schools . It has had its current name since 1974, before it was called "Neusprachliches Gymnasium".

history

The first school building of the then private rectorate school, which was supported by the community, was a master carpenter's room, which was approved and furnished on March 16, 1900. In 1903 they moved into the new school building on Victoria-Strasse, which was ultra-modern by the standards of the time: it had running water and some had gas lighting. In 1904 the school became public. In 1909 it was converted into a secondary school and in 1914 into a reform secondary school. The school changed location several times until it moved into its current building in 1915. Finally, in 1925, the move to the old-style secondary school followed.

The time of National Socialism had a considerable influence on everyday school life. The rector, who did not like the regime, was replaced. In the chronicle it says:

"By decree of November 1, 1937, the ministry transferred the head of studies, Prof. Dr. med., On the basis of § 6 of the law for the restoration of the professional civil service. Henrich retires. The reason for this allegedly served as his signature at the church protest rally against the abolition of the denominational school. (In reality, Director Henrich had long been unpopular with the leadership of the NSDAP, so that the retirement is probably due to his religious and political attitude). "

- Chronicle

In April 1943 106 students and four teachers were under the Kinderlandverschickung first to Schladming in Styria and in November of the year following Prien am Chiemsee moved. Numerous schoolchildren were also called up to serve as air force helpers and school operations in Gladbeck were no longer possible from the beginning of 1944. At the end of March 1945, shortly before the end of the war, the school building was badly damaged by bombs. In November 1945, classes could be resumed in the Aloysius School building. However, the first regular Abitur class did not return until 1949.

In 1950 the main building, which was badly damaged in the war, was rebuilt. In 1952 the three-storey north wing was built as an extension with ten classrooms and a map room. In 1953 a gym followed, in 1956 the auditorium above. In 1960 the north wing was expanded to include eight classrooms and a music hall. In 1973, two pavilions with two classrooms each were built on Meyplatz, about 200 m away, and another three pavilions with a total of six classrooms were built in the following years. After the completion of a new building complex on the former school yard in 1999, these pavilions were demolished.

When it was founded, the Ratsgymnasium was a boys' school, and since 1971 girls have also been taught. The Ratsgymnasium had the highest number of pupils in the school year 1980/1981 with 1402 pupils, the strongest Abitur class was dismissed in 1984 with 148 pupils. In 1999 the new building was inaugurated. The open all-day school was introduced in 2009.

Others

In November 1978, a support association was founded , it enables children of financially weak parents to take part in school and study trips and supports projects that cannot be financed by the school authorities, such as the establishment of the student café, a cinema room with a large-screen projector and the stage technology in the auditorium.

Since the beginning of 2008 there has been a photovoltaic system with a peak output of 3.1 kWp on the roof of the new building . The Ratsgymnasium's Climate Protection Working Group successfully planned and carried out this project.

The theater group was founded in 1977 and offers regular performances in the auditorium. The school orchestra also hosts regular music evenings here. A literature course has been offered since 1982. On July 1, 1997, the Internet AG presented the Ratsgymnasium on the Internet for the first time.

In May 2000, an alumni association was founded whose main purpose, according to its own statement, is to maintain and promote the tradition of the Ratsgymnasium as well as to maintain contacts between former students and the school and between students .
