Raul Mewis
Raul Mewis (born June 3, 1886 in Charlottenburg , † February 23, 1972 in Hamburg ) was a German naval officer , most recently an admiral in the Navy .
Life
Imperial Navy
Mewis joined the Imperial Navy on April 1, 1906 and received his first on-board training as a midshipman on SMS Stein . From April 1, 1908 to September 30, 1908 he was at the Naval Academy and School (Kiel) . He then came to SMS Elsass for one year and SMS Roon for two years . In September 1911 he was transferred to the 1st Torpedo Division. In December 1912 he was on SMS Friedrich Carl for twelve days . Until the end of the First World War he drove on seven torpedo boats , initially as an officer on watch , from June 1915 as a commander in the 2nd and 3rd torpedo boat semi-flotilla. In the November Revolution he was made available and in February 1919 was appointed chief of the 15th torpedo boat semi-flotilla for a month.
Imperial Navy
Taken over by the Reichsmarine , from March 1919 to June 1920 he was adjutant and company commander in the III. Sea battalion . He then spent four months in the ship master division in the Baltic Sea. In October 1920 he came as an adjutant to the newly established staff of the Baltic Land Forces on Dänholm in Stralsund . In February 1922 he moved to the fleet command , where he served as a liaison officer to the army of the Reichswehr . As a lieutenant captain, he was in command of the 1st half flotilla from March to September 1923. As a corvette captain responsible for maritime shipping , he returned to the fleet command for almost two years from November 1, 1923. After a year as head of the 1st Torpedo Half-Flotilla, he was commanded to the gaff schooner Grand Duchess Elisabeth for three months in autumn 1926 . On January 3, 1927, he came to command the sailing training ship Niobe . From June 30, 1929 he was commander of the Friedrichsort Naval School. From September 30, 1931 to June 5, 1933 he was Chief of Staff at Admiral Training. On June 27, 1933 he became the first in command of the first Gorch Fock .
Navy
As a sea captain in the Navy , he was fortress commander and port captain in Kiel from March 27, 1935 . As Rear Admiral and Vice Admiral he was from October 1, 1937 to May 31, 1940 Coast Commander Western Baltic Sea . After two months as Coastal Commander Denmark he was from June 1, 1940 Naval Commander Denmark and from February 1, 1943 Commanding Admiral Denmark . On March 18, 1943, he was placed at the disposal of the Baltic Sea Naval Station for two months and retired on May 31, 1943 .
