history

Red Lake Falls was a branch of the North West Company as early as 1796 or 1797, making it one of the first European branches in what is now the state of Minnesota. The French-Canadian fur trader Jean Baptiste Cadotte , a son of the fur trader Alexander Henry , founded the trading post as part of a strategy to prevent the Hudson's Bay Company from entering the Red River Valley . The post was abandoned at the beginning of the 19th century when the British fur traders withdrew from the United States.

The surrounding area was reclaimed by settlers of French descent led by Pierre Bottineau . These had come from their interim stops in Ramsey and Hennepin Counties in 1876 with ox carts. These pioneers were supplemented in 1878 by a number of French-Canadian settlers from Upper Canada . The area developed into a wheat growing area. In 1878 Earnest Buse and his partner Otto Kankel founded a flour mill at the confluence of the two rivers.

The city flourished in the 1880s and 1890s when both the Northern Pacific Railroad and Great Northern Railway ran their railroads through the city - both lines have since been abandoned - and Red Lake County was split off from Polk County in 1896. Red Lake Falls became the county seat of the newly formed county. The largest population reached the city in 1900; it has been declining since then.

The last significant event in the village was the landing of Charles Lindberg with his wife on the nearby airfield on August 27, 1927 . The Lindbergs were on a journey through the Upper Midwest .
