Red Sky (formerly known as Kerosin Cowboys ) is a 2014 action thriller produced for DVD distribution by director Mario Van Peebles and starring Cam Gigandet , Shane West and Rachael Leigh Cook . Adam Prince and Van Peebles wrote the script based on a story by Nikolay Suslov and Dave Riggs, which in turn is based on characters from the novel Kerosin Cowboys: Manning the Spare by Randy Arrington . It is a Russian-American co-production ( Svarog Films and Afterburns Films ) supported by Russian and American forces. The film has been described as a " top gun style pic" about pilots of an elite naval combat squadron.

action

In 2001, two American naval pilots in Iraq - Butch Masters and Tom Craig - are ordered to bomb an abandoned factory. The command turns out to be wrong. American experts are killed in the facility. A secret chemical device called a "rainmaker" designed to destroy oil fields is stolen. The military tribunal cannot prove the pilots' intentions and dishonorably dismisses them. After seven years, Craig is rich and famous. He runs a private pilot team, works for Top Gun and for films. Masters is a mechanic in a small airport. He's still trying to investigate his old case and dreams of his own team of pilots. To get a license to fly Russian jets, Masters goes to St. Petersburg, where he meets old friends and new problems. At the same time, a Kurdish militant group is planning to occupy part of northern Iraq and found a new Kurdish state there. They plan to use the "Rainmaker" to destroy oil fields there and make the area uninteresting for Americans. The terrorist base is in Northern Iran and cannot be reached by the US military. The Navy Reconnaissance offers Masters, to clear his name, that he is going on a secret unofficial mission to Iran with a team of retired pilots. With unmarked aircraft they have to bomb the base and destroy "Rainmaker". Sentenced to death, betrayed by friends and left behind in the Syrian desert, Masters and his team find unexpected support from the "Russian Knight" aerobatic team. Russians and Americans fly together into the final battle.
