Reformed Church in Maladers

The Reformed Church in Maladers in Schanfigg is a Protestant - Reformed church under protection of the canton of Grisons . It is in the upper village in the historic center of the village.

History and equipment

The sources of two earlier church buildings are unclear: a church under the patronage of Eusebius around 841 and one consecrated to a saint named Desiderius around 1150. From 1487 on, pastors are documented. It was not until 1635, in the midst of the turmoil in Graubünden, and thus the last village in Schanfigg that Maladers accepted the Reformation .

The church construction shows two building eras: the nave and the church tower with a single-storey bell house and tent roof come from the Romanesque period, while the choir with its reticulated vault has a Gothic style. The church interior is whitewashed. Under the plaster there are frescoes on motifs of the apostles and with a figure of the church founder in a kneeling position. Discovered in 1938 during renovation work on the south wall and in the choir, the frescoes were covered again, despite the pleading by art historians such as Erwin Poeschel that they should be preserved at least in part, following a resolution by a parish assembly citing the prohibition of images in the Ten Commandments . A sound capless , polygonal pulpit decides the choir on the right side. There is a baptismal font in the center, and behind it an organ with a triple brochure and double doors.
