The Refugee Radio Network (RRN) is an internet radio station that is considered the first radio station in Germany by and for refugees. The program is produced in Hamburg and is aimed in particular at refugees in Europe, the Middle East and Africa. The Nigerian founder and editor-in-chief, Larry Macaulay, was awarded second prize in the 2016 Alternative Media Prize in the audio / radio category for founding RRN.

Program, topics and structure

With its program, RRN aims at a global society in which peace and human dignity have priority. Specifically, the problems of people affected by flight and migration should be addressed and solutions sought. Particular attention is paid to women and young people. RRN programs focus on health, education, poverty reduction, climate change and the environment, as well as flight and migration. Experiences of a difficult escape or social exclusion in the destination country are also discussed. RRN sees itself as a grassroots movement .

RNN's target groups include refugees and migrants as well as long-time residents.

RRN programs are broadcast terrestrially via Tide 96.0 and Freie Sender Kombinat . RRN works with a number of free German and Austrian radio stations, including the local radio stations Alex Radio Berlin and Radio Unerhört Marburg, as well as the public broadcasters BR (youth magazine Zündfunk ) and the NDR . Overall, radio stations in Berlin , Marburg , Stuttgart , Schwäbisch Hall and Vienna have included individual RRN programs in their programs.

The first sponsors of RNN were the “: do” foundation, the Protestant Northern Church and the software developer Easirun. RNN is partly financed through crowdfunding . The project is carried out to a large extent by voluntary work ; According to RRN, all moderators work without pay.

history

The Nigerian business economist and draftsman Larry Moore Macaulay denounced human rights violations in Nigeria, had to migrate to Libya , and opened a construction company there. Civil war broke out there in 2011 , and Macaulay fled across the Mediterranean to Italy. There he discovered that there was a deep lack of understanding between the migrants and the Italians and founded the cultural project "The African Vibration". The project taught migrants the everyday culture and language of their host country in workshops. After being granted asylum status two years after his arrival, he went to several European countries to find a location for a radio station. Inspired by “ Lampedusa in Hamburg ”, he visited Hamburg in 2013 and founded the Refugee Radio Network in 2014 together with two refugees from Nigeria, Sammy Ojay and Asuquo Udo .

According to its own information, the Refugee Radio Network was the only refugee radio in Germany when it was founded, and there are now many more. The integration media service of the Council for Migration lists RNN as “the first radio station by and for refugees”.

RNN is a core component of the Refugee Radio Network Awareness Network project , which, according to RNN, is committed to human rights and development. RRN designed in 2016 and a live show on Web TV and organized with the support of Europe in cooperation with the Association Radio eV and the Kampnagel Internationale Kulturfabrik the conference Conference on Migration and Media Awareness 2017 , which is parallel to the Future Workshop Community Media in 2017 of the Federal Association of Free Radios held . The conference and the RRN may be Funded by the Robert Bosch Foundation .
