Reginald Edgar Allen

Reginald Edgar Allen (born March 13, 1931 in Philadelphia , Pennsylvania , † April 12, 2007 in Hammond , Indiana ) was an American Graecist and historian of philosophy .

Allen received a BA from Haverford College in Haverford , Pennsylvania in 1953 and a B. Phil. In 1957. at the University of St. Andrews , Scotland . In 1958 he received his Ph.D. from Yale University. PhD.

Allen began his professional career at the University of Minnesota and moved to Indiana University in Bloomington , then Purdue University , as a professor of philosophy in the 1960s . In 1969 he was also appointed professor of philosophy at the University of Toronto , where he was also a special lecturer in law from 1973. In 1978 he finally moved to Northwestern University in Illinois , where he was Professor of Philosophy and Classics until his retirement in 2003. In 1981 Allen received a Guggenheim Fellowship .

Focus of Allen's research in the field of ancient philosophy was Plato's works. His translations, in particular of the Symposium and the Politeia, were widely recognized. Another work dealt with the constitutional history of the Attalid Empire .
