Reid Garrett Hoffman (* 5. August 1967 in Stanford , California ) is a US -American entrepreneur and author . Hoffman is best known as the co-founder of LinkedIn . He was a junior product manager at Apple and Fujitsu , an executive at the internet service provider PayPal , a private investor, an institutional investor, the founder and CEO of the venture capital company LinkedIn, and an independent board member of both private and public companies.

Career

Hoffman was born to Deanna Ruth Rutter and William Parker Hoffman Junior and grew up in Berkeley , California . Hoffman attended The Putney School, where he made his own maple syrup , drove oxen, and studied epistemology . He completed his studies in 1990 at Stanford University with a Bachelor of Science in symbol systems and cognitive science (where he received both a Marshall Scholarship and the Dinkelspiel Award). In 1993 he received a Masters of Arts in Philosophy from Oxford University .

In 1994 Hoffman joined Apple Computer, where he worked on eWorld , an early attempt at creating a social network. eWorld was acquired by AOL in 1996. He later worked at Fujitsu before co-founding SocialNet.com, his first own company, in 1997. This focused on "dating online and bringing people together with similar interests, such as golfers looking for a partner in their area."

In 2018 Hofman was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences .

PayPal

While at SocialNet, Hoffman also served on the board of directors in founding PayPal , an electronic money transfer service. In January 2000 he left SocialNet and became a full-time managing director of PayPal. Allen Blue, who Hoffman had hired at PayPal, said: "PayPal had to fight for every market advantage it had and Reid became a specialist in holding its own in this extremely competitive environment." He was responsible for all of PayPal's external relationships, such as the payment infrastructure (VISA, MasterCard, ACH, WellsFargo), business expansion (eBay, Intuit and others), management and legal matters. Peter Thiel, Hoffman's supervisor at PayPal, said: "He was the chief firefighter at PayPal. This reduces his position, however, because there were a lot of fires at the time." At the time PayPal was acquired by eBay for US $ 1.5 billion in 2002, he was Managing Director of PayPal.

Hoffman founded LinkedIn in December 2002 with two former SocialNet colleagues (including Allen Blue). One of these was a former fellow student, the other a colleague from Hoffman's time at Fujitsu. On May 5, 2003, it was launched as one of the first business-oriented social networks. Peter Thiel and Keith Rabois, both of Hoffman's colleagues at PayPal, invested in LinkedIn. In November 2012, LinkedIn already had more than 187 million registered users in over 200 countries. Registered users can manage a list of so-called connections on the site. These are people with whom the user can have a relationship on various levels. Users can also invite people (regardless of whether they are already registered with LinkedIn or not) to add them to their connections. According to Forbes, "LinkedIn is by far the most beneficial social network for job seekers and professionals today."

Hoffman was the founding executive director of LinkedIn for the first four years before eventually becoming chief executive and president in February 2007. In May 2007, LinkedIn finally celebrated its first year of profitability. In June 2009, Hoffman became the chief executive officer.
