Reiner Rummel (born December 3, 1945 in Landshut , actually Reinhard Rummel ) is a German geodesist and emeritus university professor.

Reinhard Rummel studied surveying at the Technical University of Munich and received his doctorate in 1974 from the Technical University of Darmstadt . After a two-year research stay at Ohio State University , he was a research fellow at the German Geodetic Research Institute from 1976 to 1978 .

In 1980 he was appointed professor of physical geodesy at the Technical University of Delft . In 1993 he was appointed professor for astronomical and physical geodesy at the Technical University of Munich and, as the successor to Rudolf Sigl, headed the institute of the same name until 2009.

After various work in higher geodesy and the application of new techniques in satellite geodesy , he is involved in the basic, specialist and advanced studies in geodesy and geoinformation . His other specialties include a .:

Reinhard Rummel is one of the most important representatives of modern gradiometric measurement methods and is a key co-initiator of the ESA satellite mission GOCE . He is also the initiator and namesake of the global earth observation system IGGOS (Birmingham 1999).

Rummel lives in Munich.

Memberships and honors

In 1997 he was elected as a full member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences , where he acts as chairman of the Commission for Earth Measurement and Glaciology. In 2004 he was elected a member of the Leopoldina . Rummel is also a member of the Leibniz Society of Sciences in Berlin .

In 2005 he received an honorary doctorate from the Technical University of Graz and the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn .

For his international engagement in the field of physical geodesy and satellite gravimetry, he was awarded the Bavarian Order of Merit in 2008 and the Bavarian Maximilian Order for Science and Art in 2010 . From the DVW - Society for Geodesy, Geoinformation and Land Management eV, of which he is a member, he was awarded the DVW Prize in 2013 for his achievements in German and international surveying. For 2016 he was awarded the Carl Friedrich Gauß Medal .
