Reinhold Albert Aman (born April 8, 1936 in Fürstenzell ; † March 2, 2019 ) was a German-American chemical engineer and university professor . He had been the founder and editor of Maledicta magazine since 1977 , which he devoted to the study of the science of cursing and scolding, Maledictology .

biography

Aman studied chemical engineering in Augsburg and then worked as a translator and administrator for the American armed forces in Frankfurt am Main . He later worked as a chemist for oil refineries in Frankfurt, Munich and Montreal . In 1959 he moved from Canada to the United States in Milwaukee and found employment as a metallurgist and analytical chemist. From his marriage in 1960 he had a daughter.

In 1968 he received his doctorate on "The fight in Wolframs Parzival " at the University of Texas .

From 1968 to 1974 Aman was assistant professor in German at the University of Wisconsin – Milwaukee with courses in German grammar , style , phonetics , philology , German-language literature of the Middle Ages and Baroque , dialectology , bibliography and methods.

Aman published a Bavarian-Austrian swear dictionary , several shorter monographs and various books, among them Hillary Clinton's Pen Pal: A Guide to Life and Lingo in Federal Prison in 1996 , a handout on subcultures , argot and sociolects in American prisons, which he wrote Hillary Clinton dedicated.

Aman gained a deeper understanding of the penitentiary system in the United States in 1994 when, after his divorce in 1990, he sent two postcards to his ex-wife with collages of newspaper reports of divorced men killing their ex-wives. In this context he also sent a two-page pamphlet ( "Legal Slimebags of Wisconsin" ) with fundamental, polemical criticism of the lawyers and judges involved in his divorce. A court sentenced him, despite his admission that the letters were to be understood as black humor , to 27 months in prison, which he spent in the Federal Correctional Institution , a prison on Terminal Island, Los Angeles County , until his early release after 15½ months .

In the American documentary Fuck from 2005, Aman was interviewed as an expert.
