Release is the eighth studio album by British pop duo Pet Shop Boys . It was released on April 1, 2002 (or April 21, 2002 in Japan and April 23, 2002 in the United States) and was published by Parlophone . It was mostly produced by the Pet Shop Boys themselves - the only exception is the song London , which was produced by the Pet Shop Boys together with Chris Zippel in Berlin.

background

The album consistently contains previously unpublished compositions. Some of the guitar-heavy works in the band's entire oeuvre are to be counted. This stylistic orientation is also evident from the fact that Johnny Marr (formerly The Smiths ) supported the Pet Shop Boys as guest guitarist on a total of seven songs ( Home and Dry, I Get Along, Birthday Boy, E-Mail, Love Is a Catastrophe, The Night I Fell in Love, You Choose ).

The unfamiliar sound was received differently by both potential buyers and critics. So the release - measured against the previously published studio albums by the Pet Shop Boys - was a commercial failure and the reviews were also relatively sobering. Peter Robinson judged z. B. for the NME that the Pet Shop Boys would be the best band of the 20th century, but that this was their worst album to date. Michael Schuh, on the other hand, wrote a positive review and expressed himself benevolently: "Walking the tightrope between art and kitsch is part of the concept that emerges in a long unheard-of form on 'Release'. At the same time, the new work is the most homogeneous album since ' Behavior ' . " The album has a Metascore of 77 on Metacritic (as of December 3, 2016), which generally speaks for positive reviews. Despite the aforementioned commercial setback, around 800,000 units of the album were sold worldwide and reached number 3 in the German and number 7 in the UK charts.

The songs Home and Dry, I Get Along and London were released as singles from the album. The accompanying music videos were all conceptualized by professional photographers ( Wolfgang Tillmans , Martin Parr and Bruce Weber ). Another special feature is that Release is the band's only studio album so far that was not done by Mark Farrow for the artwork - instead, the packaging design comes from Greg Foley ( Visionaire ) and was nominated for a Grammy Award in 2003 ("Grammy Award for Best Recording Package ").

The release tour (16 countries or three continents) began on February 8, 2002 in Bristol (Anston Hall) and ended after 61 concerts on August 2, 2002 in Bangkok (Impact Arena).
