René Antoine Gauthier
René Antoine Gauthier , religious name Antoine , OP (born October 1, 1913 in La Seyne-sur-Mer near Toulon ; † January 27, 1999 ) was a French Dominican and historian of philosophy .
Gauthier, whose father was a teacher, passed his Baccalauréat in Rennes in 1931 . He then began preparing for the École normal supérieure , but interrupted it to enter the Dominican Province of Lyon in 1933 . After his novitiate in Angers , he made his profession on November 3, 1934 and continued his studies in Saint-Alban-Leysse , under the direction of Père Payssac. After a break from military service from 1936 to 1937, he was ordained a priest on August 25, 1940.
Due to severe tuberculosis , he spent his first stay in the Alps from July 1941 to November 1942 during the occupation of France by Nazi Germany . On Saulchoir , the Order Academy of the Province of the Order in France, he received the 1942 Licentiate and editing, preparing a dissertation on the generosity ( magnanimitas ) before, which was published 1951st A relapse forced him to return to Assy from 1947 to 1949.
In 1949 he was assigned to the Anger convent and subsequently to that of Saint-Alban-Leysse, where he stayed for two years. In October 1952 he was assigned to the Commissio Leonina , the project for the production of a text-critical version of all writings of Thomas Aquinas , and resided in the Saulchoir, in L'Arbresle near Lyon, in Santa Sabina and finally in 1974 in Grottaferrata . During this time he published the commentaries of Thomas Aquinas on ethics, on De anima , on De sensu et sensato , on Peryermenias , the Second Analytics of Aristotle and the Quodlibet , as well as the Latin translations of the Nicomachean Ethics of the Middle Ages. He also wrote a monograph on the ethics of Aristotle. Together with his brother Jean-Yves Jolif , he published the Nicomachean Ethics of Aristotle in a translation and a commentary of almost a thousand pages.
After a serious illness that hit him in May 1997, he passed away on January 27, 1999.
