René Maillard (born April 8, 1931 in Bois-Colombes , † December 4, 2012 in Nice ) was a French composer.

Life

René Maillard had his first violin lessons during the Second World War with Charles Maillier, who was a violin teacher in Limoges. He was then a student of Arthur Hoérée and at the Conservatory of Versailles with Aimé Steck before he studied at the Paris Conservatory with Marcel Samuel-Rousseau , Noël Gallon and Tony Aubin . In 1955 he took part in the lyrical scene Le rire du Gargantua by Randal Lemoine (after Rabelais ) in the competition for the Prix de Rome . The piece, performed by the Orchestra of the Opéra-Comique with the singers René Bianco , Louis Rialland and Jacqueline Cauchard under the direction of Jean Fournet , won the Second Grand Prix .

As early as the early 1950s, Maillard composed a piano sonata, which was premiered in 1953 in the Salle Cortot of the École Normale de Musique de Paris by Hélène Pignari , and one of his main works, the Concerto da Camera for string orchestra. From 1957 to 1960 Maillart worked as artistic director at EMI , where he campaigned for the publication of the works of Samson François , Paul Tortelier and Heitor Villa-Lobos .

Shortly after leaving EMI, he wrote his Tre partite attacate, which Serge Baudo performed at the Aix-en-Provence Festival. Then Maillard withdrew to the Côte d'Azur. Only after a break of over forty years did Maillart begin to compose again in the early 2000s. Among other things, a sonata for viola and piano (for the duo Arnaud Thorette and Johan Farjot ) and a string trio were written for the Trio des Solistes de Cannes ( Berhilde Dufour , Eszter Biro and Philippe Cauchefer ).
