The Retzbach , also called Retz , is a five-kilometer-long stream in the Lower Franconian district of Main-Spessart , which flows from the right into the Main when coming from the east .

Surname

The name Retzbach is derived from the Germanic word * wrati , which means flow. The brook gave the places Retzstadt and Retzbach their names.

course

The Retzbach rises at an altitude of about 239  m above sea level. NN in the Main Triangle on the Wern-Lauer-Platten west of the Gramschatzer forest on the south-eastern edge of the wine village Retzstadt from the Retz source . It forms a small pond at its source.

The Retzbach immediately disappears underground and after a good seven hundred meters west of the Mühlweg, about eighty meters south of the Kreuzkapelle built before 1480, reappears on the surface. On his way through the Retzbachtal to the Main he is accompanied by the MSP 7 district road (here Retzbacher Straße ), which only separates from him at the end shortly before the mouth.

It first flows south of the vine-planted slope of the Oberlangberg ( 308  m above sea level ) westwards through an orchard past a small sewage treatment plant and then runs through fields and meadows at the foot of the Unterlangberg , the southern spur of the Scheckenberg ( 341  m), lined with a tree gallery above sea level ) along. Southwest of the mountain, the brook once operated the book mill . Then it runs for almost a kilometer between vineyards on the right and the wooded northern slope of the Würmberg ( 326  m above sea level ) on the left, southwest through a narrow valley and then passes the Storleinmühle .

The stream is now fed by a drain from the Wiesleitnbrünnl , from which a mill channel branches off to the right. The Retzbach then crosses the boundary between Retzstadt and Zellingen . There are four smaller ponds in a row between the two watercourses . The Retzbachtal, which is now widening slightly, continues to border on vineyards in the north and the wooded slope of the Tiertalberg ( 341  m above sea level ) in the south . Below the Liebleinmühle , the Retzbach joins the branch again. A little further downstream, the Retzbach splits again. The stream flows north past the pilgrimage church Maria in the Grüner Tal , then runs on the southern edge of the Zellingen district of Retzbach south of the Pfarrer-Setzer-Weg , crosses under the B 27 and the tracks of the Main-Spessart railway and finally flows out at a height of about 167  m above sea level NN in the Zellingen-Thüngersheim valley widening from the right into the Main flowing in from the south .

nature and environment

The Retzbachtal is characterized by the vineyards in the north and the wooded slopes in the south. Steep limestone cliffs and gentle hills alternate.

The valley is a rich biotope with a great variety of plants and animals. Many rare plant species grow in the valley, such as B. St. John's Wort , Plantain , Mallow , Odermennig and Wegwarte . Various types of orchids can also be found in the floodplains. In the forests there are beeches , oaks , maples , ash , pine , larch and whitebeam trees .

In the dry grassland , the blue-green fibrous umbrella is scattered on the Oberlangberg and Unterlangberg, but abundant at the Liebleinmühle.

The rare camel neck flies have been observed on the Oberlangberg.

Culture and leisure

A pilgrimage and reflection path leads through the Retzbach valley . The hiking trail there is also part of the Main-Tauber-Rad-Achters . Orchid and vineyard hikes are also offered through the Retzbachtal.
