geology

The subsoil of the Gramschatzer Forest consists largely of layers of the Upper Muschelkalk . In the eastern part this merges into the rocks of the Lower Keuper and in the extreme west the Middle Muschelkalk comes to light in places . Larger parts of the rock layers mentioned are also covered by Quaternary loos in the forest area . In the limestones of the Upper Muschelkalks there are also sinkholes in several places in the forest .

flora

The most common deciduous tree species are by far the common beech , common oak and sessile oak . Other common deciduous tree species are hornbeam , field maple , bird cherry , winter linden , common ash , sycamore maple , sand birch and aspen . In addition, the heat- loving service tree is widespread and there are also some larger specimens of the service tree , which is rare in Germany , spread across the forest area.

Afforestation continued to bring a noticeable proportion of conifer species into the Gramschatzer Forest, mainly Norway spruce , Scots pine , European larch and Douglas fir . The area proportions of the Norway spruce have decreased significantly since the 1990s due to storm throws and bark beetles .
