history

The first written mention of the village goes back to 1164. They are members of the Schlüchtern Benedictine Abbey near Fulda, to whom the two villages Erbshausen and Sulzwiesen owe their existence, while the neighboring towns of Hausen near Würzburg and Fährbrück were founded by the Neustadt am Main Abbey. In 1167 the Bishop of Würzburg confirmed to Abbot Ulrich from the Schlüchtern monastery his possessions in Sulzwiesen, which a knight Otto von Wickershausen had donated to this monastery. The monastery laid the foundation for the later village of Sulzwiesen. But because Sulzwiesen was quite damp and wet at that time because of the many springs, they probably began to build a new settlement on a small hill a short distance away, today's Erbshausen.

The Lords of Grumbach played an important role for a long time . The Peasants' War, the Markgräfler War, the invasion of the Swedish army and some other political turmoil brought much suffering to Erbshausen and Sulzwiesen. In between, the plague did the rest.

Until the end of the 16th century, the Lords of Grumbach were the bailiffs or feudal lords of the village, then Erbshausen-Sulzwiesen fell to the Würzburg Monastery . In 1814, Franconia was finally assigned to the Kingdom of Bavaria . According to the records of the Ordinariate of Würzburg, Erbshausen-Sulzwiesen first belonged to Fährbrück and after the destruction of Fährbrück in the Peasants' War, it belonged to the parish of Bergtheim. From 1899 Erbshausen-Sulzwiesen received pastoral care from the Augustinian monastery in Fährbrück.

On July 1, 1972, the municipality of Erbshausen, which had previously belonged to the former Karlstadt district for 110 years , became part of the Würzburg district through the district reform in Bavaria . In the course of the municipal reform, the municipality lost its independence on May 1, 1978. The previously independent communities Erbshausen, Hausen bei Arnstein and Rieden merged under the community name Hausen bei Arnstein to form a new unified community. The seat of the administrative community was initially Bergtheim , then later the municipality of Hausen near Würzburg (new name from October 12, 1978).

In the course of the last century, Erbshausen and Sulzwiesen have largely grown together to form a single village with around 900 inhabitants today.

The designation of building areas has led to brisk construction activity and a considerable increase in the number of residents in recent years.

Monasteries and churches

When a church or chapel was first built in Erbshausen-Sulzwiesen is in the dark. One can assume that this happened around 1160. The concerns of the monasteries - here the Schlüchtern Benedictine Abbey - were not only directed towards the settlement, but also towards the salvation of their subordinates. Another indication of an early chapel could be the church patron St. Albanus , who, like the patrons of Hausen near Würzburg and Fährbrück, St. Wolfgang and St. Gregor, is closely related to the Benedictine order .

The old, still existing but profane church in Erbshausen goes back to Prince Bishop Julius Echter von Mespelbrunn (1573-1617). Julius Echter von Mespelbrunn had a church built in 1598, the post-Gothic, compact tower with the pointed helmet, the typical Echterturm , can be seen from afar. The prince-bishop separated the communities of Hausen near Würzburg , Erbshausen and Sulzwiesen from the parish of Bergtheim , which became the seat of the parish after Fährbrück was destroyed in the Peasants' War. In 1613 he set up a new parish in Hausen near Würzburg and incorporated her Erbshausen with Sulzwiesen as a branch. A new, larger nave was added in 1794. In the early 1970s, a new Catholic church was built under Father Odwin Lindner, in accordance with the guidelines of the Second Vatican Council . It served as a replacement for the predecessor from Julius Echter's time, which had become too small, and was consecrated on June 23, 1973 by Auxiliary Bishop Alfons Kempf. She took over the patron saint of the old church, St. Albanus . The old church was profaned and is now privately owned.

Half-timbered houses

Behind the former church in Erbshausen is the half-timbered building of the old school on the street . The neighboring house by the cemetery is painted in Art Nouveau style on both sides of the nave under the roof with children wearing a long garland. Next to the former Gasthaus Stühler, opposite the village linden at the former fire station , there is a pretty half-timbered building from the 17th or 18th century in the rose-covered garden. Strong, interlocked crosses fill the compartments under the windows. On the other side of the street, which has been extended to the village square, there are two more picturesque half-timbered buildings as a beautiful end of the village. The other end of the municipality extends to the former hamlet of Sulzwiesen. The large, well-kept properties are striking here.

Bakehouse

In 1838 the community baking house ("Backhäusle") in Sulzwiesen was built by Mr. Mitesser from Hausen near Würzburg . The cost of the construction at that time was 423 guilders. Since the ringing of the church bells in Erbshausen was not always audible for the Sulzwiesen residents, the town council decided to buy a bell. The little bell with a diameter of 49 centimeters and a weight of 1.5 centners was donated in 1845 for 60 guilders by Johann Keller from Sulzwiesen. In 1847 an annual wage of almost five guilders (approx. Four euros) was paid for the repeated ringing of the angel of the Lord during the day for the first time. This bell and the bells of the Erbshäusener church had to be sacrificed for war material in 1942 during World War II . In 1949, Father Raphael ordered a new bell with the inscription Gloria in excelsis Deo and a diameter of 37.5 centimeters. The "Blootzglöckle" was regularly made to vibrate and tinkle by hand on a string of bells. The shape of the cross on the roof is known as the patriarchal cross or "Caravaca cross".

At that time, the individual families were able to regularly bake their bread for 14 days. Before bread was baked, apple, plum and cheese blocks were usually baked, and cookies were also baked at Christmas time. At the time of the church fair, geese and ducks were fried until they were crispy and stolen from the oven by young boys and eaten in secret.

Until 2003, the "Backhäusle" stood unused at the exit to Hausen near Würzburg . The population wanted to renovate it. For the 25th anniversary of the community in May 2003, the interior was cleaned and repainted. In September of the same year, up to 25 volunteers cleared out the roof, repaired the roof structure and covered the roof again. After a general overhaul in Passau's Rudolf Perner bell foundry in January 2004, the bronze bell, which weighs around 30 kilograms , was then returned to its former location, next to the bell room. On January 26th, 2004 the little bell was able to ring again after five years of retirement. The bell now rings electronically with a bell ringing system three times a day at 6 a.m., 12 p.m. and 6.30 p.m. When all the renovation work on the "Backhäusle" was finished, the Erbshausener-Sulzwiesener celebrated it with an "Oven Festival" on May 2, 2004. Now that the fireclay vault of the oven has been rebuilt, bread and bloots can be baked in the "Backhäusle" again become.

Wayside shrines

At the entrance to Holundergasse (near the old church) you will come across an old wayside shrine with the unusual theme “From the blood miracle to Walldürn”. On the outskirts of Erbshausen, not far from the industrial park, you come across a well-preserved processional altar with the theme of the Fourteen Holy Helpers .

Facilities

Erbshausen-Sulzwiesen has a Catholic church , a kindergarten , a primary school , the volunteer fire brigade (FF), a multi-purpose hall, a DJK sports club and an industrial area on the A 7.

primary school

Until 1676 the place had no teacher. The children were educated - if at all - in neighboring Hausen. In 1677 an own teacher was named; At that time teaching was in a rented apartment. From 1678 to 1680 the first schoolhouse was built in Erbshausen. It was torn down in 1788 because of dilapidation and rebuilt. Around 90 years later, in 1879, a new school was built next door, which was expanded in 1905 because it had become too small.

On November 20, 1963, the new elementary school in Erbshausen-Sulzwiesen was opened. It was occupied at the beginning of the school year in September 1963 and was inaugurated a month later. The increasing number of schoolchildren and the existing shortage of classrooms prompted the local councils of old to decide on the new building. Construction began in February 1962 under Mayor Franz Beck. Hanns Habinger from Karlstadt was the school's architect. The villagers were proud of their new school, which initially taught 140 children from first to eighth grade.

Volunteer firefighter

Before the voluntary fire brigade was founded, the entire population carried out the extinguishing work in the event of a fire. The management was made up of a number of knowledgeable men who had to observe a precise, prescribed fire order. As early as 1550, a fire order appeared, which was supplemented over the next centuries and ordered to be strictly adhered to. The Erbshausen-Sulzwiesen volunteer fire brigade was founded in 1875: on August 1, 1875, 30 young men declared that they would found a fire brigade in the local community. During the war from 1939 to 1945, the fire brigade consisted mainly of young people between the ages of 14 and 18, and some female fire fighting groups were also trained. On February 24, 1944, the fire fighting groups were deployed in the fires that broke out over Sulzwiesen as a result of incendiary bombs being dropped; four barns burned down.

Multipurpose hall

The multi-purpose hall , built in 1980/81, is designed for both sporting and social and cultural events. Apart from sporting events of the DJK Erbshausen-Sulzwiesen , dance and festive events, citizens' meetings as well as theater performances and music events take place in the hall. With an inner area of 15 × 27 meters (standard dimensions of a single gym ), the hall can be seated with up to 600 seats. In addition, a fixed stage was installed.

Before the multi-purpose hall was built, there was no large event room in Erbshausen-Sulzwiesen for around two decades, as the community hall built in the early 1950s was converted into a community kindergarten a few years later. When event and multi-purpose halls were increasingly being built in the surrounding towns in the 1970s, the DJK Erbshausen-Sulzwiesen initiated the construction of a similar hall directly on the local sports field in 1978 . The municipality paid for three quarters of the construction costs amounting to 1 million DM. Apart from that, around 15,000 hours of voluntary work went into building the hall. In 1986 a technical defect caused a fire that destroyed the roof and the sports floor.

DJK sports home

In October 1971 it was decided to build a DJK sports center. The sports home was completed on June 3, 1972 and inaugurated on July 3 and 4, 1976.

media

The newsletter “Dorf-Zeitung” appears twice a month in Erbshausen-Sulzwiesen. The "Dorf-Zeitung" informs the residents of the northern district of Würzburg with current information from the various communities. In addition to news, there are also event notices and classified ads.

Since 2006 the website erbshausen-sulzwiesen.de has seen itself as an Internet village portal for the community. As a result of the foundation of the association for the promotion of the village community erbswiesen in 2008, the portal switched to erbswiesen.de, where it offers all residents and interested parties the opportunity for information, exchange or presentation. The creative collaboration is welcomed not only on the extensive material on the site itself, but also at public and mostly charitable (ideally for the benefit of local institutions) events that take place over and over again.
