Reynaldo Villalobos , also Ray Villalobos at a young age (born November 9, 1940 in Los Angeles , California ) is an American cameraman and director .

Life

Villalobos, descendant of Hispanic immigrants, attended El Camino College in Torrance, California, and California State University in Dominguez Hills , where he graduated from high school with a degree in Art & Design. He was then drafted into the Navy.

Back in civilian life, Villalobos made his first contacts in the film industry in the 1960s. He went through several training paths, including in the laboratory and as a camera assistant. In 1970 he was the first time (TV's favorite camera (as an assistant) to a production The Young Lawyers [The Young Lawyers]) involved. Villalobos remained active as an assistant for several years, e.g. B. at the Scorsese cinema classic Alice no longer lives here , and gradually worked her way up to become a simple cameraman (camera operator). In the latter capacity he was involved in the 1976 terrorist thriller Black Sunday , the 1977 comedy Der Schmalspurschnüffler and the reactor accident drama The China Syndrome , which was staged the following year . Villalobos' tutor during these three years was John A. Alonzo .

In 1979 he got his first job as head cameraman (for the disappointingly fancy Travolta strip Urban Cowboy ). Since then, Villalobos has been a sought-after visual designer for professional mainstream entertainment, which, however, rarely has an artistically distinctive signature. Reynaldo Villalobos photographed in all subject areas: highly dramatic material ( for the life of a friend ) as well as pubescent slapstick ( not another teen film! ). Often times, the stories supervised by Villalobos take place in the lower-class and emigrant milieu. The son of Latin American immigrants has not only created visually appealing slum sadness but also repeatedly designed urban-chic pictures from the business and yuppie world.

Reynaldo Villalobos continues to work for television beyond his cinema engagements, both for series ( LA Law , LA Doctors ) and for one-off productions (e.g. Sinatra ), which have even earned him the occasional award nomination. Since the 1980s, he has also directed a remarkable series of episodes for numerous TV series, including The Hitchhiker , Knightwatch , The Night Falcon , Booker , LA Doctors and Battlestar Galactica, but also individual productions such as the detective thriller Hollywood Undercover .
