Rhys Adrian Griffiths (* 28. February 1928 in London , † 8. February 1990 ) was a British writer who particularly by its for the radio and television of the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) and Independent Television authored (ITV) radio plays known and whose works were also filmed for German television films .

Life

Adrian left school in 1942 and then worked as a casual worker before working as a stage manager and actor on a small stage after completing his military service in the British Army . He then began his literary activity with short stories and radio plays for summer festivals, shows, pantomimes and West End - musicals written. In the early 1960s, he began writing radio plays for the radio and television programs of the BBC and ITV.

After his radio drama debut Betsie (1960), he wrote nearly thirty other radio plays over the next thirty years. With Big Time (1961) he wrote a play under the pseudonym Jimmy McReady together with Julian Pepper , in which he portrayed the juvenile delinquency of the time very credibly. His radio plays made him one of the BBC's most sought-after authors of the 1960s and 1970s, alongside John Mortimer , Harold Pinter , James Saunders and Guy Compton .

His radio play Passionate Thinkers (1957) was translated into German by Marianne de Barde and Hans A. Hammelmann under A passionate thinker (1962) , who also edited his plays for German television, such as Der Protest (1964) by Eberhard Itzenplitz with Alexander Kerst , Gisela Trowe and Walo Lüönd or Campingplatz (1964) by Gustav Burmester with Lis Verhoeven , Ernst Jacobi and Joachim Schmiedel .

In 1964 the two-person game A Nice Clean Sheet of Paper (1964) starring Donald Wolfit and John Wood was first broadcast . In 1971 Roger Fritz directed Between Us Two with Helga Anders , Arthur Brauss and Rolf Zacher . Freddie Jones , Peter Woodthorpe and Gerald Cross played in the radio premiere of Angle (1975) . The following year he had success on BBC 7 with Buffet (1976) starring Richard Briers , Cecile Chevreau and Shirley Dixon . In The Clerks played alongside Freddie Jones and Hugh Burden again Gerald Cross.

In the 1985 premiere Outpatient , Michael Aldridge and Andrew Sachs played two men waiting for their regular check-ups in a hospital, Sylvia Coleridge, a patient desperate not to be called, and Margot Boyd the nurse.

One of his last radio plays, Toytown (1987) premiered Peter Vaughan and James Grout as two subversive park rangers who are only concerned about their own well-being, and William Fox and Elizabeth Spriggs as their natural enemies: a self-righteous, complaining Married couple. In addition, Michael Graham Cox plays a corrupt cop. Most recently, Upended was published (1988).
