Elizabeth Spriggs

Elizabeth Spriggs (born September 8, 1929 in Buxton , Derbyshire , † July 2, 2008 in Oxford , Oxfordshire ) was a Laurence Olivier Award- winning and BAFTA- nominated British actress .

Life

Spriggs was one of the most famous character actresses on British television. Between 1982 and 1995 she played the role of Nan in the series Shine on Harvey Moon . She has also appeared in various BBC films by Dickens . Between 1962 and 1976 Spriggs was a member of the Royal Shakespeare Company and played various Shakespeare roles in the theater, including Gertrude in Hamlet with David Warner in the title role. In 1978 she received the Laurence Olivier Award for Best Actress in a Supporting Role for her portrayal in Love Letters on Blue Paper .

Spriggs played sporadically in films such as Sense and Sensibility and Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone (as Fat Lady ) and was also active as a radio play speaker, most recently for BBC Radio 4 in Barbara Pyms Jane and Prudence .
