Reclam's radio play guide

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Reclam's radio play guide is an out of print reference work that appeared in 1969. It deals with the radio play and its authors . According to the information in the printed edition, the radio play guide was published by Heinz Schwitzke with the assistance of Franz Hiesel , Werner Klippert and Jürgen Tomm. The online version published by the Baden-Württemberg State Media Center, on the other hand, names Heinz Schwitzke and Werner Klippert as authors or editors and does not mention Franz Hiesel and Jürgen Tomm.

One-time edition

Reclam-Verlag in Stuttgart moved the radio play guide within its universal library as volume 10161/10168. In contrast to similar reference works by the publisher such as the opera or drama guide, Reclam's radio play guide did not receive any revised new editions. Due to the interest of only a minority in the demanding literary radio play and the neglected occupation within literary studies with the topic, the project failed in the following years due to the problem of the difficult canon formation with an increasing number of radio play productions. The now barely manageable audio book market is a factor which, according to the publisher, makes a reprint of this or a similar guide unlikely.

Since 2005, with the radio play lexicon by Thomas Bräutigam , a comparable work has been on the market that claims to give "an overview of radio play history through the description of selected individual works". However, the radio play lexicon was not published by Reclam, but by UVK Verlagsgesellschaft in Konstanz, which specializes in media studies .

Radio play canon

Schwitzke and Klippert were recognized radio play theorists and sponsors of their time. As long-time radio play bosses at public broadcasters, you came from practical experience, like most of the other employees at the plant.

The selection of the pieces should be understood as a first attempt to fix a canon for the then still young art form of radio play. Schwitzke described the procedure for limiting the selection and content to 600 printed pages in the preface to the radio play guide:

“It is exclusively about original radio plays, and among these again about those that will presumably retain their importance for the current and future radio play program or that are and will be in literary conversation. If the whole thing was not to become extremely fragmentary, no distinction could be made between tried and tested German works and foreign ones that have become home with us. Where we had to be cautious for reasons of space, we tried to introduce the authors concerned with at least one work; a few times we only bring a biographical note for obvious reasons.

In individual cases, the question of the significance of the radio drama was not without influence on our selection. However, the various productions could not be discussed. For each piece only the dates of the premiere or the German premiere are listed; that does not mean that there may not be other productions on tape. It was not the purpose of the book to distinguish between them by judgment. Otherwise, the little information about the pieces - for example about the number of people and duration - also only serves to give a more precise idea of the respective work. "

Probably the best-known radio play that was overlooked by the authors in their selection is Walter Ruttmann's sound collage Weekend from 1930, which was only rediscovered at the end of the 1970s.
