The Ricarda Huch School is a high school in Kiel . The school was founded in 1861. A total of 677 students are taught by 53 teachers (2012).

history

The later Ricarda-Huch-Schule was founded in 1861 as the first public secondary school for girls in Schleswig-Holstein in the old town of Kiel. As a school building, the city bought the Jahns Hof am Kleiner Kiel , the birthplace of Max Planck . Initially around 200 female students were taught in five classes, and from 1862 on, six classes. However, since the state school had competition in the form of several private institutes, including the high school for girls of Johanna Antonie Broekel , the number of female students decreased in the following years. In 1878 the school was downgraded to a middle school in 1878 .

In 1890 an initially private seminar for female teachers was affiliated, from which the upper school level developed, at which women could also take the Abitur from 1911 . But it was not until 1925 that the first female Abitur graduates received full admission to study. In 1924 the girls ' high school, now the largest school in Prussia with 1,000 students, moved to the Westring in Kiel-Ravensberg . During the Second World War , the school building was confiscated as a dormitory for foreign workers. The older pupils were taught in shifts at the Hebbelschule, the younger ones were transferred to Usedom with the Kinderlandverschickung .

In 1948 classes took place again at Ravensberg and the school was named after the poet Ricarda Huch, who had died shortly before . In 1962, the company moved to a modern building, also on the Westring opposite the university church. On June 9, 1969, the nationwide student protest spread to the Ricarda Huch School. The police broke up a demonstration of 200 students who had forcibly gained access to the barricaded school building. Despite some resistance from the college, co-education was introduced in 1971 . Accordingly, the school was renamed “Ricarda Huch School” five years later. High School of the State Capital Kiel ”. In 1991 the RHS was selected as one of five pioneer schools in Schleswig-Holstein with bilingual teaching . This method has been offered regularly at the RHS since 1997. The school has been continuously participating in the EU's Comenius program since 1996 . In 2005 the first wind class was introduced at the Ricarda Huch School. This gives the students the opportunity to learn an instrument in addition to theoretical music lessons. The school has been extensively renovated and modernized since 2011, and the renovation of all classrooms, the administration wing, the cafeteria and the sports hall has been completed for several years.

architecture

When the city was rebuilt after the Second World War, many schools were also rebuilt. The architect and head of the Kiel Building Department Rudolf Schroeder (1897–1965) was responsible for building the post-war school in Kiel . The cityscape of Kiel is still characterized today by the pavilion schools built at the time , which include the Ricarda Huch School. In 1957, the Kiel council meeting decided to build a new school building on what is now the school's property. The main features of the architecture of that time are still clearly visible. The architectural style of the pavilion school includes the concept of the "garden school" as a low-rise building with class gardens, large window fronts and vestibules.

In 2011, renovation work began. This includes the renovation of the auditorium , the classrooms, the construction of a cafeteria and the redesign of the sports facilities. The cafeteria consists of two parts of the building. The two-storey block building (facing masonry) contains leisure areas, the building services and a distribution kitchen; the single-storey head building with a generous glass facade contains the dining room with around 240 seats. The concept of the cafeteria includes, on the one hand, airiness, transparency and clarity; on the other hand, there are also quiet areas for different needs. In addition to the anthracite-colored buildings of the auditorium and the cafeteria, a new three-field sports hall is to be built. The completion of these construction measures was completed in 2014.

School program

The main idea of the Ricarda Huch School is the concept of humanitas , which is translated on the one hand with humanity and on the other hand with higher education. This includes a respectful and tolerant approach to different characters. Every student should be able to develop in the best possible way. The Ricarda Huch School is based on the concept of performance and at the same time feels committed to humane values. Emphasis is placed on wide-ranging education that encompasses the areas of languages, natural sciences, humanities, social sciences, arts and sports.
