Ricardo "Rocky" Juarez (born April 15, 1980 in Houston ) is an American boxer . He became an amateur featherweight champion in 1999.

amateur

Attack boxer Juarez, named after Rocky Marciano Rocky, took part in the 1997 World Championships in Budapest , but retired early. He became the American featherweight champion in 1998 and 1999. In 1999, at the age of 19, he also won the World Cup in his hometown of Houston . In the final he beat Tulkunbay Turgunov, Uzbekistan (13: 2).

During his participation in the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney he defeated the German vice world champion Falk Huste and defending champion Somluck Kamsing , but in the final he was controversially defeated by the Kazakh Beksat Sattarchanow , who was repeatedly warned not to keep but was never punished, and won silver. His balance is 145-17.

professional

In 2001 he turned pro and won his first 23 fights, but only controversial in 2004 against the undefeated Zahir Raheem, also a former successful amateur. Among them was a knockout victory in the 10th round against Antonio Diaz in 2003, who was named knockout of the year by The Ring . When WBC title holder Chi In-jin canceled his fight against him in 2005, he was turned against Humberto Soto and surprisingly lost the fight for an interim title.

One weight class higher, in super featherweight, he was able to challenge WBC title holder Marco Antonio Barrera in 2006 . He lost the first fight by split decision (115: 113; 115: 114; 114: 115), but the rematch more clearly.

After winning his next two fights, he got another chance to fight for the WBC world title in November 2007. This time the opponent was Juan Manuel Márquez . He lost this fight, however, clearly on points.

However, he was able to win his next fight again, so that he got the chance in February 2009 to box against the WBA featherweight title holder, the Indonesian Chris John . This fight was played in his hometown of Houston and ended in a controversial, for Juarez flattering draw: all three judges rated the fight 114-114. Seven months later, the two opponents met again. This time Juarez lost clearly on points.

On April 3, 2010, he got into the ring against Jason Litzau . This time it was about the title of the North American regional association NABF . The fight had to be stopped prematurely in the seventh round due to an injury to his opponent, which he suffered from an accidental headbutt. At this point, Rocky Juarez was behind with all three judges and thus lost this fight.

It was followed by three more defeats in 2011 and 2012 against Alejandro Sanabria, Vicente Escobedo and Andrew Cancio, before Juarez won a fight again in 2012 for the first time after a series of six defeats in a row. He beat Antonio Escalante by technical knockout in the eighth round.
