history

A tower house was probably built near Riccarton during the 15th century . Around 1820, William Cuninghame, 4th Baronet, had it expanded into a mansion , today's Caprington Castle . It is still owned by the Cunningham clan today . Around 1672, the nucleus of the nearby Treesbank House emerged . Its pigeon tower is classified as a monument of the highest category A. Riccarton owned the market rights and the market held has had some significance in the past.

traffic

During the 18th century, a three-arched bridge was built to cross the Irvine. It was an important link to Kilmarnock. A second bridge was added later.

On the north-western edge of Riccarton, the A71 ( Edinburgh - Irvine ) and the A77 ( Glasgow - Portpatrick ) cross two major highways. The A76 coming from Dumfries also ends at the junction . The A719 ( Fenwick - Prestwick ) and in Kilmarnock the A735 (to Lugton ) and the A759 (to Troon ) are also within a few kilometers . Ten kilometers to the southwest is Glasgow Prestwick Airport, an international airport.
