Richard Alexander Heß (born June 23, 1835 in Gotha , † January 16, 1916 in Gießen ) was a German forest scientist .

Life

Richard Heß, son of the politician Karl August Heß and Emilie Caroline née Weber, studied forest sciences at the Aschaffenburg Forest Academy as well as political, legal and natural sciences at the University of Göttingen after graduating from high school . During his studies in 1857 he became a member of the Brunsviga fraternity .

As a result, Heß worked as a forester for over ten years before accepting an appointment as Professor of Forest Science and Director of the Forestry Institute at the University of Gießen in 1869 . Heß - he served as rector between 1887 and 1888 and as chancellor in 1888 - taught forest production, forestry economics until his retirement in 1910 - he represented the Preßler-Heyersche soil yield theory , forest management and forest history .

The forest research institute founded under his management in Gießen in 1882 enjoyed a good reputation at home and abroad. In 1878 his best-known work, Der Forstschutz , quickly found international recognition, was published four times in Germany up to the First World War and was translated into English, French, Italian, Russian and Japanese.

Richard Heß married Sophie, née Schlenck, in 1863, with whom he had two daughters and two sons. He died on January 16, 1916 at the age of 80 in Giessen and was buried in the old cemetery .

Honors (selection)

Hess received an honorary doctorate from the Philosophical Faculty of the University of Giessen in 1869 , the title Privy Councilor on September 12, 1890 and in 1907 the title of Privy Councilor . On June 14, 1881 he was awarded the Knight's Cross First Class of the Order of Merit of Philip the Magnanimous , on November 25, 1900, the Cross of Honor, on November 25, 1904, the Commander's Cross, Second Class, and finally, on June 4, 1910, the Crown of Commander's Cross, Second Class awarded. On January 5, 1889, he received permission to accept and wear the Knight's Cross First Class of the Duke of Saxony-Ernestine House Order .
